My son and his fiancee have got tickets for the TV awards tomorrow night at the Royal Albert Hall, very exciting.we are not used to 'dressed up' do's. I understand that for girls it is a dressing up occasion , long drss lots of glam which she will do perfectly but are there actual rules for men's clothes, does black tie mean smart suit etc or does i mean a bow tie?
Any information would be great

black trousers either with or without braid down the side of the leg, dinner jacket, white shirt, black bow tie. She should wear a long dress, dark colour prefarably black too. If you go to a hire shop you can look at a dinner suit and then off to the charity shop to get one a lot cheaper - as long as it does not pong!Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

'Black tie' is shorthand for 'dinner jacket suit'.
They can be hired.

OHHH! I had a feeling it was going to be complicated. He has a black suit. So it is the bow tie that makes it what it is? Will black suit and bow tie do? it's awful when you find you are not dressed right and they are looking foward to this so want to get it rightLoretta0

As already said "black tie" stands for dinner suit. This can in fact be a white tuxedo jacket with black trousers as well as a black dinner suit. Nowadays it is also quite common that the bow tie is not black but quite colourful with a matching cummerband

If the kilt is worn a Bonnie Prince Charlie jacket with black bow tie should be worn as apposed to a tweed day jacket.
Ladies of course should be long evening dress in any colour and as you say, glam

A dinner suit is usually a bit different to a lounge suit (normal suit like you'd wear to work) though I'm not sure how they differ.
Black tie is bow tie as has been said, and ladies must wear long dresses. Short dresses are cocktail dress on dress code, but you can often get away with knee length for black tie these days as standards are slipping!! lol!! DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

Also a dress shirt will be requiRed, not a usual white shirt I'm afraid. They can be hired along with the suit, my hubby usually pays £50 for 36 hours hire including cleaning on return plus a deposit which is refunded on return.

You can buy dress shirts (wing collar, pin-tucks down the front, sort of thing) for about £10 in Debenhams - got new one for B/F last year.
Worth checking charity shops or asking mates of similar size if you think he won't have occasion to wear dinner jacket again - but that said, if you can get one reasonably priced it is very useful to have - you never know when you might need one!The best advice you can give your children: "Take responsibility for your own actions...and always Read the Small Print!"
