Nielsen Online panel?

I received this email today. Has anyone heard of the Nielsen Panel before and know a bit more about them?

Today, we are offering an opportunity to a select group of *************members (I removed the name since we are not allowed to mention them here) to join our sister panel, The Nielsen Online Panel and help make the web a better place to work, play and surf. As a valued member of the Nielsen Panel all new members will receive two plays in our Wave and Win instant win game just for installing their software as well as being entered into their £5000 quarterly prize draw.
Once installed, you will then continue to receive 2 Wave and Win instant win plays and prize draw entries for every month that you remain active on the panel.
You can earn further plays and prize draw entries by referring friends as well as taking part in Nielsen Online surveys.
Sound interesting? Click on the link below to sign up. Registration takes just a few minutes and involves filling out a quick profile and downloading a small un-intrusive piece of software.

Nielsen is a big survey company, so there isn't a problem there.

I joined the Neilsen Online Panel about 18 months ago, and it works in the same way as GFK Web Appreciation Surveys.

You have to download a piece of software from Nielsen which allows them to see which websites you access. I deleted the software after 3 months as it was messing around with IE7, and I kept getting error messages.

I don't think I won anything, and as ******** aren't offering any incentive to signup (I had the same email) I see no advantage in signing up.

    I see a problem.

OP didn't know who Neilsen were, so either
    1) This is a scam/phishing email not associated with Nielsen
    2) Nielsen are spamming people with whom they have no prior connection.

Either of which would make me suspicious about the email.

Nielsen are not emailing directly, the company we cannot name are sending the invitation to their mailing list on behalf of Nielsen. I don't think it's a phish attempt - the email itself looks pukka!

No, it is not a scam. Nielsen are a legitimate company.
And as already mentioned, the invites to join are coming from an established research company. This is standard practice with some research companies.

I joined up too but only because the email link came through a certain research company that  isn't allowed to be mentioned on here.

I received the same e-mail this morning, however I won't be joining as the rewards to me do not sound that appealing compared with other websites I use.
