Oh my God text messages are not private !

Last night i had a call from a man who asked who i am, i said 'no you called me who are you' and he gave his name, he said in the last week he has had text messages from my phone that make no sense to him, i replied i don't know him or his number so how can i be texting him ?? i asked him to send a txt back to me so i can see what he has recieved and he did, and yes it was one of my txt that went to a friend of mine and also him so it appears, so i went through my phone book but not a single number even comes close to resembling his !! he called me back again i explained i don't have his number i can't undeerstand how this has happened, he then tells me he is on holiday in cyprus and in this last week he has had 30 text from my phone plus some from 2 other numbers ! the ones from me are old text about 6 weeks old.

I obviously will call my provider today as im worried about txting now
where is my privacy ?
there is obviuosly a network error.

has this happened to anyone else ?

Text messages aren't private at all as far as I know. Some even end up online!
  • What !! how the hell do they get online ??

i realise they are stored for a period by provider but how did these get sent to a random man, poor man he has had them from 3 of us without us doing anything !

My bosses wife's phone recorded that she received a phone call from my boss yesterday evening, that he didn't make and the service provider says he didn't make. It turned out that the phone call was from her son but her phone says it was my boss. Don't know if this is due to service provider or phone though. Which service provider are you with?

CK40: some phones only match the last few digits of the number; I had two numbers in my old T610 that had the last 7 digits the same and it was very confusing lookign at the missed called to see who had called. Doesn't explain the OP's experience of course.

  • I have spoke to my provider T Mobile who have no record of me sending txt or calls to this guys number over the last 2 mths, what we think is..... the guy is with voda and one of my close friends is on voda too so there is a chance the txt were ones i sent to my friend and since they both on voda some how they have been forwarded to my friend and this mystery guy !? T mobile will contact voda to try investigate. T mobile say they have not heard of this before since its 30 text re sent from 6wks ago.

And hard for T mob to do much as they have no record.
but they have taken this guys number and my friend who is on voda plus a copy of the txt to see if it was indeed sent to her and somehow sent to this guy too !

    very odd.

I had a similar issue a few years back. I sent a message to my Mum and got a reply from some girl that clearly was not my Mum and from a different number. I didn't understand where it went awry, but it has only happened once and assumed the SMS I had sent had become corrupted in transit and, well, computers are not infallible.

Anyway, the moral of this story is that you should never send personal details (or information you wish to keep private) in an unencrypted/public/unprotected manner just in case it is delivered to the wrong person.

The frontline staff wouldn't have access to any system that could track what was happening at the network level. You'd need to raise a technical fault (If they'd let you for this ?).
