Your rights: Oven breaks after 1 year & 2 weeks

Hi All
My parents bought a 400 quid electric fan over (Whirlpool) from B&Q.
A year and two weeks after purchase, there was an almighty bang and it seems the element has blown.
B&Q don't want to know and have said that they need to call Whirlpool, who will charge a 70 pound call out charge, plus parts an labour.
Is that it? Do they have any other rights? An oven should last way more than a year. I read in the Guardian on Saturday about a man who got a three year old camera repaired through the "Sale of Goods Act" despite no warranty, because the camera should last longer than that. Can they try that?
Anyone know where I can go to find their rights? Otherwise it'll be Salad next time I visit!
Thanks in advance.

Before you get into a major wrangle with Whirlpool, I would price up a new element. We had to replace ours on an Electrolux oven and it only cost about £20 for the part. I'm not a DIY person by any stretch of the imagination, but I managed to fit it myself. Just slide the oven out and the older element unclips from the back, and the new one slots in. I didn't even need a screw driver!0

Thanks for all the advice. We went to see the manager with various bits of paper, and to cut a long story shory, they're sending someone from Phillips round to sort it out, free of charge.
Excellent result. :-)0
