02/01 numbers behind 084 etc. numbers

Can anyone give a site that can show me the number behind 084 numbers as there always is one. I have looked at saynoto0870.com but they do not have the number listed. Many telcom companies have these numbers for dialing long distance numbers?
No reliance should be placed on the above.

  • The fact that there is no such publicly-available list and that firms go to great lengths (such as changing their old '01' or '02' numbers when they launch new money-making non-geographical numbers) to hide the 'real' numbers at which their Disguised Premium Rate 0870 (etc.) numbers point, is the reason behind the saynoto0870 site.

The fact that Ofcom appears at last to have realised that there is public disquiet on the whole issue has resulted in them launching one of their 'consultations' - although it is fairly obvious they have already made up their minds to adopt their Option 2.

The more acceptable use of such numbers is by telecom firms using them for dial-through access to international routes. There, because specific ranges are fixed rate, they can advertise a dial-through number with (say) an 084441 prefix (5p/minute from a BT line) for access to a particular country for which they have bought bulk capacity at (say) 2.3p/minute. Because the difference is the profit, it's not unreasonable for them to want to keep the real number at which the 084441 number points secret!

Yes I can agree to them wanting to keep it secret, but if there was a way to find the number then in theory one could phone the respective destination for free.

Try to find your own alternative numbers if they are not listed.

Have a look at Guide to finding geographical numbers in the Site Related section of Say no to 0870. ;)

I have managed to determine a number of geographical numbers behind premium rate phone lines.

These include BBC phone ins, weather forecasts, competition lines and astrological charts.

You often find that these numbers come in "groups". I got a unitel phonecard and it had the geographical numbers behind the 0800 numbers on it. I then tried other geographical numbers in that number range (using my free Vodafone weekend calls). I now have quite a list of 'useful' phone numbers!

Have you put them on Saynoto0870?
