Ridiculous food labelling for UK customes only

I bought a jar of gherkins at Aldi and whilst the ingredients are listed in ten languages, only the English translation says they must be consumed within three days! What utter rubbish. Does this not apply to our European friends too, or is ther some magic ingredient for Europe.

In any case, I keep them for weeks in the fridge:rolleyes:

Yes,it says exactly that but only in the English translation. And it would be nigh impossible to eat a jumbo jar of gherkins within three days, and terribly bad for the digestion:rolleyes: I usually eat them within three months!
  • It's too much health and safety coupled with too many stupid people (and no win no fee lawyers).

I've seen similar on cheese and ham - methods of preserving milk and meat so that they can be kept for long periods of time. Mature cheese sits on a shelf for years before it's processed, packaged and sent to the supermarket.

I've always found that if it looks ok and smells ok then it probably is ok.

Obvious isn't it - once they arrive in the UK they become unfit to eat after 3 days of opening.

Must be something to do with our weather!

    ok basic terms for you.

You buy a jar of Gherkins in Sweden. The instructions say store them in the fridge, where you leave them for the next 12 months, eating a few out of the jar weekly.

You buy a jar of Gherkins in England. The instructions say store them in the fridge, but eat them within 3 days. After 3 days you throw away the jar and go out and buy another.

One jar of gherkins in sweden lasts 12 months. The same jar in England lasts 3 days. Spot the rip off.

    Got it now?

I keep gherkins for aaaages, they're in pickle! they're hardly gonna go off after 3 days... just a scam to make you chuck 'em and spend money on a new jar.

i still dont see why start a thread, its not even a rip off, the vinegar keeps stuff preserved longer than 3 days,

Erm, because the label is telling you that the food must be eaten in 3 days when it clearly isn't the case. You know it, I know it but far too many don't and will go by what it says on the tin.

Some people in the UK actually throw food away on the "Best Before" date, because they've been frightened so badly by media reports about food poisoning and TV ads saying you need to sterilise all surfaces with bleach before even thinking about preparing food.
