Want to grow some veg but only have one window sill
exactly as is says on the tin...
I did find a window sill veg growing pack but it had so many different types of veg that I won't be able to fit it all on my one window sill!!
What veg can I grow in a window box? What veg can I grow indoors in my kitchen?
TIA

try things like lettuce, lettuce leafs e.g spinach ,rocket etc
radish ,strawberries ,herbs or try mini/patio veg .
there is a great selection of miniveg available from aubergine to tomatoes
try thompson and morgan and nickys seeds for ideas.
also remember mini veg grows quicker than normal veg so you may get a sucession of crops from the season as long as you rotate crops in your box and feed regularly to replace nutrients .
any way good luck hope this helps0 -

would these grow ok in a window box? Also how would I be able to weigh it down as I live on the third floor (don't want all my veg ending up on the roof below!!)0 -
Spring onions?
I would tie them securly with strong wire to your window frame if you can. And bolt the bottom of the pots to something, a tray that is fixed maybe?£200 saved for baby things :T0 -
You can also put hanging baskets down the sides as well to make more room. Tumbling tom tomatoes go well in baskets for example and strawberries.
I once saw a brilliant window sill veg garden where they'd really used the baskets well.Living on Earth can be expensive, but it does include an annual free trip around the Sun.0 -
tie or drill your window boxes to something rigid or two bricks either side.
all of those vegs will grow in a window box but parsnips and carrots will need a deeper box0 -
If you attach your box to a chain on each side and then attach that yo a couple of hooks in the window frame, it might hold the window box.
Are you rented or purchase and can you fix a batten across the window space and still open the window?
You can grow a lot, depending on how easy it is to water - make sure there is a drip tray under the window box. The deeper the box the better.
leaf vegs - as cut and come again vegs or salads - cut them about a centimetre above the central leaf node.
Also herbs.
Next year, you could grow a few beans up one side, or a cordon tomato.
For cheap seeds try Lidl, even now, or www.alanromans.com.
For the winter, rocket, lambs lettuce, Giant Red Mustard, mizuna, beets or kales as cut and come again would work fine. They are all hardy as anything. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Hi
I live in a flat so don't have the luxury of being able to grow veg in my own garden. I do have a couple of window boxes which I used to grow lettuce in during the summer.
Can someone tell me if there are any veg which will grow during the winter?
Thanks0 -
More lettuce!

If you pick a reasonable hardy variety - and perhaps keep it under glass against the worst of the cold? - you should be on for some cracking winter salads......Oh come on, don't be silly.
It's the internet - it's not real!0 -
No reason why you should't be able to plant any of the usual winter Kales or Brassicas especially the many miniature versions.Living on Earth can be expensive, but it does include an annual free trip around the Sun.0

Thanks,
I don't think I have room for glass, it's a tiny window sill. Would lettuce still grow in colder climates? It was 0 degrees here last night :eek:0
