Sounds fine to me. People like different things. The wedding sounds just perfect, i.e surrounded with those that matter, dressed in something you feel comfortable in. Others prefer the pomp and circumstance - that's fine too. You don't have to go on holiday to have a quality of life. The happiest person I have ever known was my late Grandfather. He was a fisherman who lived right by the sea, once retired on a state pension only, and never left the county.

I understand where you're coming from, we are also prudent with what we buy despite being able to afford what we want very easily. However, it has to be said that there is a negative extreme to this too. After all, life should be enjoyable and what you describe above sounds very punishing and miserable to me - no holiday, no honeymoon (ever?)…
We believe in happy marriage and not dream wedding. On hindsight, we are so glad that we did that.:j We enjoy life in a different way, just being with each other is good enough and we are already contented.

Now we could afford a dream house in a desirable location on one income with no debts except mortgage.:T

Aim to be mortgage free in 10 years time ;)

A lot of people would be a lot happier today if they had followed the same route. How many are saddled with debt from 'enjoying life' via material possessions and travel when they have missed completely the enjoyment you can get for free.

Gosh, I feel a bit like a politician! If you read and try to comprehend what I wrote, you will see that I did not say anything about debt or enjoying life via material possessions, which is the spin you have put on it. Perhaps this is your interpretation, depending on your life circumstances, I don’t know.

I didn't quote you on that post. My comment was in reply to SwingJunes, not yours, and a general - and true - observation of the situation a lot of people find themselves in at present.

A "nice house in a desirable location" is a material possession too ;).

As long as "frivilous living" isn't paid for by debt (and you still have some back up) then I see no problem with it... Fair play to the OP if she's been very happy living a frugal life. I'd sooner have a more modest house and have done some travelling in last 20 years...horses for courses!

Our house is a beautiful home, not a material possession, ;) a place where we could relax and enjoy life without financial worries.

Dh have to go on overseas business trips once in 6 months to commission projects and his company allow me to tag-along.:D We are fortunate to be able to travel to many countries without huge expenses.
