Baby wipes, you will need hundreds of thousands of Baby wipes.......!
You shouldn't use baby wipes on a newborn - very harsh on their super-sensitive skin. Cotton-wool and water is fine for the first six months, and is much cheapert too. After that, the cheapy wipes are fine.
  • We made a timeline of what we would need to buy and when. Some things you need before the birth, but other things like a highchair and stairgates you won't need until the baby is a few months old.

We got a steriliser off freecycle but we have held off buying anything like bottles or breast pumps as you never know how long you might need them for. I intend to breastfeed, but I know it doesn't always go to plan so I will buy feeding bits once my plans become clearer!
Self employed and loving it :D

I have a 6 month old daughter, and she doesn't cost us a fortune! Like you said the baby milk will cost around £10 a week, and a good tip is to buy nappies in the large boxes of pampers or huggies like they have in ASDA - it saves alot of money and alot of trips to the shops. Also if you want to get own brand nappies i have found that ASDA ones are the best, very soft, absorbent and flexible.
Another tip while i think of it - get a steam steriliser rather than a cold water one as the bottles are done in minutes which means you can survive with just 6 bottles rather than having a whole cupboard full! Oh and Boots Wide Neck Bottles are about £10 for 6 and thay are fantastic - couldn't fault them.

Just one more thing - don't spend loads of money on cute little baby clothes as until they are about 4 months you'll most likely keep them in babygrows most of the time as they are more comfy and easier to change when they get puked on lol!

My brother once he found out my wife was pregnant was, rather than buy us an expensive present when born started adding £5 - £10 worth of toiletries to my mums shopping ever week then would bring it round - He would buy wipes one week, nappy sacks the next, then sudacream etc....This way we had plenty supplies and the only thing we really had to buy for the 1st few months was nappies.

If you do do this - 1 or 2 Bottles of baby shampoo will last you a year, anybody want to buy the other 5 we have!

DS is incredibly sensitive to toiletries - hence we have a box full of them bought by my in-laws during my pg...:rotfl: . They also bought disposable nappies, which meant for the first 3 months I didn't need to buy any. After that I got into cloth nappies most of the time.
As for the wipes I generally use washable ones and wash them with the nappies. Out and about i prefer to use the Simple ones - I think you can get them in Sainsburys now for half the price of the bigger names.
    The IVF worked;DS born 2006.

I don't think any of these items from your list and necessary. Travel systems are huge and bulky, we never bothered - we got a car seat, a pushchair that went flat, and that was fine.

If you breastfeed, you don't need the bottles etc.

I'm not quite sure what furniture you need? We didn't get any!

I can honestly say with all muy heart, that if I had spent even a couple of hundred pounds on my 2 I would have been in trouble. You can get everything you need for less than £100 if you are prepared to go second hand. New is not necessary, as most stuff is so clean when sold on it is practically new anyway.
    Loving the dtd thread. x
  • Just after i had had my first child i went on to avent website as had lost steriliser instructions (i was expressing) it offered me the chance to do customer research so i filled it in 2 weeks later they rang me up to take part. They sent me heaps of free things including breast pump, bottles etc. Although i was breast feeding it all came in handy some of the things we already had so we exchanged at mothercare!!!

The only thing I can think of would be a wardrobe to store baby's clothes and other stuff.
