When you say turnip, do you mean swede? Sorry to ask but I know I called the orange fleshed thing a turnip, but I understand the white ones are turnips.

I dont bother peeling (swede) and chopping anymore since reading on this site of how to cook it in the microwave. Stab it and put it in whole into the microwave for 10 mins and then check it and keep cooking for a minute at a time and checking it. When its soft cut in half and scoop out the flesh and mash with a little black pepper.

I mix mine with equal quantities of mashed potato. Use to top shepherds pie.

Thanks you for this, loving this way of cooking swede, will give it a go as it's such a bother for the arthritic old hands I tend to buy it ready chopped. Impressed !!!

I definitely mean turnip. Not swede. I know what to do with swede, but this is turnip.

Wonder whether this would work for turnip too.. Turn it into puree.
  • I`m another swede-in-the-microwave fan! Not as keen on turnips, but I do buy the very small ones and steam them whole when doing other veg as OH loves them this way.

oh I can't wait to try this method - have two swedes sitting in the kitchen so will try the smaller one, probably tomorrow.

I sometimes mix mashed swede with celeriac & top a pie.
