In Cornwall my gran always called the top one turnip, love it mashed with lashing of butter. And cracked black pepper.
Also good in stews, soups and as an alternative to mashed spuds on top of cottage pie.

we are Cornish too the top is definitely a swede tho it' be some wrong to put turnip in a pasty

    Hi,

I have a medium sized turnip in the fridge for like a fortnight and it needs using up. The reason I haven't cooked it yet is because I don't know what to do with it really!
It is not something I have ever cooked with.

I believe it has very low calories. My OH is on a diet, today we are having a salmon on a bed of roasted vegetables, would you roast a piece of that too? Sliced into chip like squares?
Or what do you do with yours?
No added butter or cream recipes if possible please if I am to serve it on low calorie days (I have seen quite a few recipes like that online.. trying to avoid that).

    Thank you

Irish stew. Vegetable soup. Recipes available on request. Neither involve butter, cream or milk.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)
  • Hi,

peel, and cut into equal size lumps, boil it up with equal quantity potato, drain, add pepper and mash, no need to add butter or milk.

    Can be frozen in portions.

I've just peeled and thickly sliced one to go in the pan of roasted veg I'm doing. Also on there are butternut squash and an onion coriander seeds, black peppercorns sea salt and a drizzle of olive oil.

When you say turnip, do you mean swede? Sorry to ask but I know I called the orange fleshed thing a turnip, but I understand the white ones are turnips.

I dont bother peeling (swede) and chopping anymore since reading on this site of how to cook it in the microwave. Stab it and put it in whole into the microwave for 10 mins and then check it and keep cooking for a minute at a time and checking it. When its soft cut in half and scoop out the flesh and mash with a little black pepper.

I mix mine with equal quantities of mashed potato. Use to top shepherds pie.
