Is the linkage the bolt that holds them in place?

Linkages are usually nylon or plastic balljoints, commonly referred to as a knuckle. The plastic/nylon wears and the cup part starts popping off. A bodge is to wrap a tie-wrap round it or drill a hole and wire it together. Usually the only parts that have a bolt or nut on is where it attaches to the spindle of the wiper motor and the spindles that the wiper arms attach to. If either was loose, it wouldn't result in a clunk. They'd just stop working whilst you could hear the motor spinning. With a worn "knuckle", you would get the knocking.
  • I've just put some of these on and the clunking has stopped! They seem to be decent wipers. They won a recent Auto Express test, which is why I got them:

    Thanks for all the advice.
