Yes they are that open that they won't even let you drag music onto your ipod because it HAS to go through itunes or movies
yet every other mp3 player on the market will.....so yeah real free
oh and the iphone thats locked to every free source application
yet i can install ANYTHING on my windows run phone
To be fair to Apple, when you run an online service with DRM then you need software limitations to ensure you meet your licensing and distribution requirements that the record labels impose to allow their music to be shared digitally. No other manufacturer of MP3's runs such a service, therefore you can't compare them on that.
I can empathise why Apple don't allow third party applications to be installed and ran on their flagship phone product. Windows Mobile, ever from WinCE has been plauged by unreliable software applications that made it one of the most unstable platforms. I myself even wrote some flakey applications to run on it that are still in use to this day (but I'm not permitted to take 2 days to redo them), but I now developers and enthusiasts are writing better programs and making it a better platform. The Iphone's, and Apple's reputation would nosedive if it was subject to the same thing.0 -

I think many people do that. I find it's still more economical to buy CDs rather than downloads. Plus you have a physical backup and the quality is usually better (not many downloads offered at CD bit rates). Hopefully copying music CDs to computer will be made legal soon. It's ridiculous it isn't already. But second round consultation for law change some time this year I think. (Probably one of the few illegal things we're allowed to talk about on the forum).

I just buy CDs and rip them onto my computer. Then I can have them in whatever format and bitrate I want. I used to use Apple Lossless, but now I use AAC @ 256 kbps. If I want to go back to Apple Lossless, I can just rip them again.
If you want to purchase online, iTunes is the best store to use if you have an iPod, IMHO. That way you at least know your downloads will be compatible with it. It's easy to use, not too expensive, and they also offer a lot of music which is DRM free, which is nice.0 -
