Parking on outskirts of London?

I'm wanting to make a trip for a day or two to London from the East Midlands. The train is getting so expensive and complicated to book.
Don't want to drive into central London because of the congestion charge , had the idea that we could drive down the M1 and park somewhere on the furthest edges of the tube system, then get the tube into the centre.
Does anyone know of a suitable place to park?

St Johns Wood. There is an underground car park just over the road from the tube station. Been using it for years.

Just double checked it is outside the congestion charging zone. The carpark is on Kingsmill Terrace off Acacia Road which is just off the A41.

I live in Northampton and go to London (somewhat) regularly. Jump on the M1 and head down to junction 4. Go to Stanmore tube station (2/3 miles off motorway). Parking is £3 all day (or £1 at weekends). It's the last station on the jubilee line (the grey one ;))

    Hi

I havent any experience myself on this but you can see here tube car parks

    http://www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/tubestationcarparks/default.aspx

Stanmore , Jubilee line may be worth considering. 3kms from J4 via A41 and A410

Also check tfl website for planned line closures (esp weekends) under live travel news.

I've used Luton Station before. It is really easy to get to from the motorway and quite a cheap train ticket into the centre of London.

  • Just wondering if there are any South Coasters out there who travel into London by car? Want to do a trip to West End for DH's birthday on 11 Oct (Saturday) to see a matinee and return home that evening or Sunday if I can find a hotel that won't break the bank. So looking for a good, cheap place to park close to tube or mainline station on outskirts of London - coming up on A3. Alternatively a budget hotel in similar location with cheap or free parking for the night. (Hope it's not a pipe-dream!)

Thanks in advance for your help.

We stayed in Wembley once in the travel lodge opposite the stadium. It was within yards of the station and very easy to just jump on the train into central london.
