I thought all lone parents had advisers; perhaps it's because you're on IB.
  • the only 3 things that come to mind are child tax credit, family allowance£28,and as a full time student if no other adults living with you then nil council tax

The benefits board and my council website are saying Full time single parent students are entitled to Housing Benefit, maybe not the full amount but definately something!

Well Im dating a guy, yes but he has his own house. We are totally seperate finacially and economically. I stay at his 1 night a week when the kids go to their dads.

Im sure that still makes me a single parent in the eyes of the benefits system no?

Hey guys, I wasnt sure where I should put this as its a bit of both boards.

Im on incapacity benefit currently, and get housing/council tax benefit too as I live alone with my 2 daughters.

I have been accepted on a degree course and had my student finance application accepted and I will be getting the following:

    student maintenance grant £4787
    Tuition fee loan £2800
    Parent Learning allowance £1470
    Special support grant £2835
I may get a small bursary from my Uni of £830 too and I will also apply for the Disabled Students Allowance but Im not sure I will get anything.

What I want to know is will I be able to claim any other benefits on top of my student fianance? I know it already seems like i have alot listed up there, but I will have to find £620 in rent and council tax alone and support my girls.

Is there other funding I can get? Have I missed anything?

    Many thanks lovelies! :A

I did not know you can even claim incapacity benefit and also do a degree, surely if that's the case they would class you as capable of work? At an office say or other clerical post. Have you checked that it's possible to keep your benefit in these circumstances?
  • Hi Loop

I would double check on the IB as I think it depends on which rate you are get, if it is the short term rate then I believe it will stop when you start your studies, but with either of the long term rates (higher or lower) you may be entitled to the six month return to work phase.

Having said that you are only entitled to earn £85 a week before they adjust your IB. Earnings will be from Grants not loans and will be split over the number of weeks the course runs for.

I would make an appointment at your local DWP/Job centre that awards you your IB and ask them. The person you see should have all the knowledge to help make sure you get all the benefits you are entitled to.

Or give your local CAB or DAB a call and ask them.

Good luck with college and children, I hope all works out well for you.
