It costs £80 to assign - which is payable when the plate comes off the previous car.
If you don't assign to another vehicle then you must also pay the £25 to retain.
Total is £105 to take off and keep on paper, but there is then no fee to pay if you put it back on another car before the year is out.
If the year of retention expires, you can pay a further £25 and so on.
In the mean time you can also change the details on the retention cert which is another £25.
All information is here - http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/cherish.htm
I may have got my figures wrong £105 sounds right. I have my plate on retention.0 -
£105 to Retain, £80 to transfer. If you keep the retained mark on the Retention Certificate for 12 months, you then have to pay a further £25 for every year you keep it on retention.
You will be sent a reminder that the Retention of the mark is due to expire, (12 months later) if you overlook that, you can still back date the certificate and fee with a letter of explanation to the DVLA.
If you have an accident in a vehicle bearing a cherished mark, the insurance company will issue you with a letter stating that they have no claim on the registration mark. You will be able to use this letter, and the V5 registration certificate (before you send it to the insurance comapny) to transfer or retain the mark. If the vehicle is to be written off, the insurance comapny will write it off under the replacemnet mark given to the vehicle, following the transfer. this needs to be done ASAP after then accident.:j0 -
Agree with a lot of what's been said here, so won't repeat it.
The cheapest way to hide the age of a car is an Irish style number plate, usually recognizable because it has an I or a Z, and no year identifier. You cannot buy these from the DVLA. But they're easily available.
