Personalised Number Plate-Is It Easy To Do?

Options
Hi

We are thinking of buying a newer car early next year (been left some dosh) and OH would like to get a personalised number plate. I dont like the idea of them-think there abit tacky (sorry if you have one...lol). OH would like to get an older BMW (about 4/5yrs old) and put a private plate on it so nobody knows the age of it  I do worry about him sometimes..lol.

Anyways, how do you look into this and find out how much they would cost etc? Once you buy, do you have to register it-I really dont have a clue. How much are they?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi Penny-Pincher!!,

I hope that you don't mind, but I'm going to move your thread over to the motoring board, where hopefully you will get more replies.

    Hi Penny-Pincher

Boosyboots is bang on with her advice to visit the dvla website for more info.

Cost of the plate, registartion etc is all detailed on the site and it is VERY straightforward.

A quick word of advice - you will find lots of adverts in newspapers/car mags etc offering you a personalised numberplate service. Always, always, always check with dvla online first to see if the plate you want is available and if so deal direct with dvla. All that these people do is get the plate for you and put on a (sometimes whopping) amount of money for their profit.

For example I have just done a quick search for a fairly typical plate P80JEC and DVLA would charge £250 inc vat & assignment fee, wheras https://www.regtransfers.co.uk would charge you £393.88 for the same plate (although they would supply the actual plates as well).

    Hope i've helped

If you just want to hide the age of the car you may find that a Northern Ireland plate is what you need. Both our cars have one. If you can find an appropriate one they can work out much cheaper, (KAZ, BAZ, etc.) There are some dealers actually in NI who can supply them on retention for under £100 plus assignment fee. I did this and have had no problems at all. One of our plates has now been on 4 cars, the other on 3.

Second that MrSP, I've had my DIW Irish plate for about 11 years (funnily enough it started out on a 5 year old BMW 320i and it was £80 then, not everything governmental goes up :j ) and has since been transferred to my new vans. I just get the dealer to do the transfer when I swap. (I know personal plates are a bit sad PP but it's a man thing!) :D
  • Thank you guys-couldnt find my post LOL.

Just whatever you do don't get it mis-spaced or printed in a funny font - they just look tacky.

Oh, and lots of companies with huge catalogues of plates advertise in the back of the Auto Trader magazine.

find the one you want on the DVLA website, phone them up and buy it. They send you the relevent form. Take that form to a car shop and get the number plates made then queue up for 2 hours at your local DVLA office with your MOT, tax disc, log book and the document they sent you.
They'll give you a new tax disc, stamp the MOT and send off the docs for the new log book. Then you'll just need to bang the new plates on inform your insurance and pay the miserable thieving sods 15 quid for the pleasure.
  • Remember it costs about £125 pound every time you swap the number onto a vehicle.
Also if you do not assign it to a vehicle (put it on retention) within 12 months you need to pay £25 to renew the retention certificate, failure to do this will result in you losing the number and having to but it back from the DVLA.
Also if the car is written off by an insurance company, the insurance company can take possesion of the plate.
  • don't i know that Micko, discovered that when i wrote my last car off and sold it as spares or repair. Too much hassle chasing round,

Also costs £70 to put it on retention if you sell the car but don't have another to put it onto.
