Hi all!

Am pretty new to the forums here, glad to find a Wales section! Just wanted to see if everyone knew about Costco opening a store on July 31st in Leckwith? An email has gone round work to say we are eligible for membership, so might pop down there today to sign up.

Yes, but are they really worth it? As far as I know, you have to pay to join, about £23-29 depending on whether you are business or private, and I wondered whether you really get wholesale prices, or just 'knock-off' lines that appear on the market.

    Any opinions, anyone?

I have the criteria but can`t make up my mind. How will I avoid tempatation and where on earth would I store 24 cans of beans and who on earth will help me eat 12 danish pastries? Tell us what it is like please but try not to be too glowing or I might be tempted

I had a chance to join with my last job but then the nearest was in Bristol and i think i would have had to have paid £25. I went to have a look around and decided it wasnt worth it for me.
If you are eligible to join i think you can have a day visit ticket to have a look around to help you decide before shelling out.

I'm a member and I love it - I used to use the Edinburgh Costco and can't wait for Leckwith to open. Well worth the £10 it costs me per year. (Sorry Kittie).

Don't get me wrong - I have seen tat there. But I've also got some good stuff (there's less tat and more good stuff the Makro IMO).

The thing with the real bargains is you do need the initial expenditure unfortunately - like large quantities of laundry products for example which last FOREVER and work out so much cheaper than the supermarket in the long run. My sister has used hers to get stuff for the kids birthday parties (including the cakes) and saved quite a bit.

If you're unsure, the day pass is probably better as you can have a good scout around and see the what they have and for how much.

Some of the stuff sometimes doesn't represent a bargain - for example some toiletries I can often get cheaper as Tesco BOGOFs.
:D Make a list of important things to do today. At the top, put 'eat chocolate'. Now, you'll get at least one thing done today. :D

Costco is a massive company that doesnt sell knock-offs, its all new things, from major high street companies, its not like aldi or whatever that has foreign prods that arent familar.

They are from seattle and have been in the US since the late 1980's. I have been a member since 1991. They have their own brand, called Kirkland, which is great quality as well. They have some US brands like hershey's, Tropicana, and then mostly UK brands. They also have their own bakery/ fresh counter, plus film development service, plus eyeglass service/fitting.

The idea of buying in bulk is that you save money - I can buy loo roll, laundry detergent, dog food once a month (longer for the detergent, which I bought in March and is still near the top of the container, even with me doing 2-3 loads a week). The prices are cheaper than any supermarket that I have seen. Buying in bulk is cheaper for me as I dont have to drive to the market as much, saving petrol. The membership costs also come with coupons which they give you 2x per year which allow you further savings.

If youre planning a trip to the US, you can also use your UK costco card in any location.

    Worth a look - x:cool:

I qualified for my membership through my job with Local Governent. I can take up to two non-member guests with me every time I visit and I took a Welsh friend with me to my local Costco in Reading last night. While there, I discovered that I could get a card for my friend for £12 and when his card expires he can then renew it without needing to meet the usual employment criteria.

Go as a guest a few times and make up your own mind before deciding whether or not it's good for you. I find it a good place to shop for reasonable savings but that's not the only reason to go there. Their wines are of a high standard as are their fish and meats. Throw a few of their rib-eye steaks on the BBQ and your carnivore quests will be raving about them for years! The yellow with red blushed Ranier cherries are to die for but they're only in season for about one month per year. I'm quite partial to their 1 liter bottles of Skippy Peanut Butter but I accept that's very much a personal thing.
