There is some misinformation going around. I wish Martin would update his article on this. I would like to make the point that MBNA will now charge 2% for the transfer every time:

-- even if done on the original application form

-- even if done using the tear-of-form on the envelope used to send your signed agreement back.

-- even if its your first balance transfer

-- even if you do it on-line.

There is NO LIMIT ON THE FEE: its 2% of your BT amount.

Curiously I had a 6 month extension on a 9 month (10K) deal agreed on Friday when calling MBNA to cancel, and the customer loyalty department waived the fee without being asked because "you're still in your first year". I was very surprised about this, as I was expecting to have to attempt to haggle a £50 fee down to £35. All I had said was that I was only interested in 0% deals for an extension because there were so many about, and when asked if I wanted a balance transfer just asked whether there was a fee.

It strikes me that just pre-Christmas is probably a key time for sales and customer retention targets so if there's any leeway around it should be now (but I wouldn't steam in expecting it, as this is probably highly discretionary and I think I just struck lucky).

Are you sure about this? I was under the impression BT on application are still ok. According to the very first post in this thread there is a small entry buried in the T&C confirming this.

Assuming the BT applied for on application is charge-free, I would like to know if you get chance to shift the credit limit from your existing MBNA cards to your new one. Otherwise the BT amount will be seriously hampered by your credit limit.

Let us know how you get on Smartsaver ;)

Sorry about this - i thought i had written this elsewhere on the board.

MBNA do not charge 2% uncapped for everyone. Some customers have a trial of it at the moment (done randomly) and if you're unlucky you'll be one of them. However the main £50 policy hasn't been changed. The trial is only on MBNA itself not other cards (or so i've been told)

Hence why the articles haven't been changed

I was just passing time reading through Virgin 's T&Cs for their MBNA CC... like you do (Ive not even got one of these cards!) :) And I noticed this
1f We may charge a handling fee for balance transfers. We will charge a handling fee for all cheque transactions and cash transactions. All handling fees will be 2% of the amount of each transaction, and will be at least £2. For cheque transactions and balance transfers the handling fee will be no more than £35. There will be no maximum handling fee for cash transactions. We will charge an annual handling fee of £0.
So with this card the BT will be capped at £35.
Just thought I'd share this with you all :)
