Am I doing this the right way, and is it just a matter of entering the code quickly before the message comes up, or can I stop the message somehow?

there is a digit missing from that imei

the codes are unique for each phone

to enter the code:
put a different network sim in
type the FULL code including the #pw+ (use the * key to get these) etc in the "Restriction Code" box
press the button in the middle of the keypad to complete the unlock
