Going to London, no idea where to stay!!!

Hi catowen,
Recommending accommodation isn't my strong point given that I already live here, but a few other pointers:
The cheapest way for you to travel around London is to avoid using public transport before 9:30am (as you can't get cheap all-day tickets until then) and then buy an Off-Peak Day Travelcard for yourself (Zones 1-2, which should cover the vast majority of places you might want to go, costs £5.30 a day - check on the tube map or with a member of station staff if you think you'll be going further out.) Under-11s go free, and your Travelcard will enable you to buy a ticket for your 11-year-old for £1 a day. If in doubt, check with station staff.
Another thing to remember is that if you are all fit and healthy and in possession of decent shoes, one of the best investments you can make is a London A-Z (from any bookshop). Suddenly you realise that locations which look quite far apart on the tube map are within walking distance (often via scenic routes). For example, I often walk through Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens from Marble Arch to the Royal Albert Hall, which takes just over half an hour and is much more direct route than by tube or bus, not to mention you're going right through the middle of a rather attractive park...
Hope this helps!Operation Get in Shape

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Mayfair in january-it is across the road from the Ritz so in a great area. Green park Tube across the road (1minute away!) walk to oxford street all theatres and across green park to river-parliament, eye etc. It is in a great little spot but we paid £100 a night for a family room which was very nice-can highly recommend!0

hi again catowen - shamac's suggestion sounds like a good one - Green Park is VERY central (located on Piccadilly, a short walk from Buckingham Palace, and on a junction between three tube lines which between them provide connections with the whole of Central London).

£50 /night is very low for london . hotel direct are usually prettty good and you might snag a bargain from lastminute.com. also hotel direct list the nearest tube stations and give you directions from them.0

Thank you everyone for your help - ive found a Hotel called the Linden House Hotel, £160 for a triple room for the 2 nights, including a continental breakfast. There is a cheaper one, a Holiday Inn at the Royal Docks (£140, not sure if it has a breakfast) - can anyone just check these and see which one would be best for me, considering i would prefer to be near transport (dont want to be wondering the streets) and we want to visit the museums and do some shopping (spend my Harrods win!!!). They are here http://www.lastminute.com/site/travel/hotels/hotels-results.html?skin=engb.lastminute.com&lmnRooms=1&returnURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lastminute.com%2Fsite%2Fmain%2Fhomepage.html&preserveName-CATEGORY=hotels&preserveName-requestURL=%2F%3FCATEGORY%3Dhotels%26searchType%3Dbasic&lmnShowRestaurants=True&lmnCheckOutDay=14&lmnLengthOfStay=2&lmnRoom2ChildAge2=-1&lmnCheckInDay=12&lmnRoom2ChildAge1=-1&lmnRoom3ChildAge1=-1&lmnChildrenRoom3=0&lmnChildrenRoom2=0&lmnChildrenRoom1=2&preserveName-CATID=4&lmnRoom3ChildAge3=-1&lmnRoom2ChildAge3=-1&lmnCheckInMonth=8&sortOrder=price_ASC%2Cdistance_ASC%2Cstar_ASC&method=hotelsFullSearch&lmnRoom2ChildAge4=-1&lmnCheckOutMonth=8&CATID=4&preserveName-SEARCH=basic&lmnRoom3ChildAge2=-1&errorURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lastminute.com%2Fsite%2Ftravel%2Fhotels%2Ferror.html&filterResultsBy=all&searchTypeName=cityName&lmnCountry=Any&lmnAdultsRoom3=2&lmnAdultsRoom2=2&lmnAdultsRoom1=1&lmnRoom1ChildAge3=-1&lmnRoom1ChildAge2=10&lmnRoom1ChildAge1=11&lmnLocation=London&lmnRoom3ChildAge4=-1&lmnRoom1ChildAge4=-1&preserveName-skin=engb.lastminute.com, again, some a little more expensive on there that might be better for me???0

Docklands is way out of town.
Travelodge Southwark and Covent garden sound much better.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -
Travelodge Farringdon is the cheapest at £69 per night and is just a very short bus ride (4 stops) to Kings X station and tube. It's a good clean hotel, stayed there a few times myself.

Pity you're not going the week before as I have two rooms booked there for the 4th August that I don't think I can use now.
Also, if you were to go on a Sunday most of the London travelodges have rooms @ £49“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

Good location and looking at the photos, the bathrooms have recently been refurbished. Good pick.
Sussex Gardens is very handy for where you want to go. Just walk across Hyde Park to Harrods and you're walking distance from Oxford Street too.
One of my favourite walks from that end of town is through the park, down Constitution Hill to the Palace, through St.James Park and on to the Houses Of Parliament.0 -

My advice with children is stay very central. You are going to London midweek and even in August cheap midweek does not exist.
My advice is stay at www.royaladelphihotel.co.uk which is right on trafalgar square in Villiers Street and you can walk everywhere. It is basic with no air con' but for a few nights; ok. I stay there regularly and for the price unbeatable for the location. It also gets good write ups on Tripadviser.com
You might touch lucky at www.londontown.com for a cheap midweek room but un-likely.
Recommend for the sight seeing visit www.walkit.co.uk and use it to map out walks between the London landmarks. Royal Adelphi is also only a 5 minute walk from the half price ticket booth in Leicester Sq for cheap west end theatre tickets which are all within a 15 minute walk at most from the Royal Adelphi Hotel.
The further from the centre you are the more time spent on public transport and also the cost. You also cannot just pop back to the hotel to drop off shopping and have a quick refreshing shower.0
