Buying my first Laptop

Options
Hi all, sorry - just would like a bit of advice. I have decided to buy a dell laptop - is Baseit worth buying the more expensive one... Intel® Celeron Processor 550 (2.0Ghz, 533 MHz FSB, 1 MB L2 cache)
1024MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x512]
120GB (5400rpm) SATA Hard Drive

£379

Or this one
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T5750 (2.00 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache)
Specifications - Base
2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x1024]
160GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive

£429

I just use it for general surfing the internet, emails and maybe storing some photos thats all.

Is it worth me paying the extra for the more expensive on?

Thanks for your help

If it is a Windows Vista system I would opt for the 2nd choice as it is more capable of properly running the system.

definately the second choice... for £50 more you are getting a decent bump up for your money. even though the processor looks the same speed, the core 2 duo, is a lot faster, and also you have double the amount of memory, which you need when you're working on your computer

the hard drive space is adequate for a laptop at 160gb, again, a bump from the first one.

the thing with computers is, you think you're going to do hardly anything on it. but the more you use it, the more you'll find things to do.

Ever considered a Netbook, its ideal if all you're doing in surfing the net, emailing and storing photos. They start at around £220.

The second (more expensive) one is definitely better value and will be faster. It sounds like you won't really need the extra performance, but for a mere £50, I'd definitely go for it!
  • Thank you guys, looks like I will buy the 2nd one then.

Just one last thought - am I buying the right one? My home pc is Dell and I have been happy with it - should I stick with Dell - what are your opinions on the Acer Aspire with similar spec? In an ideal world I would like to spend around £300 - but will stick with the Dell one if thats best?

    Sorry

Thanks again for your help so far

Generally Acers are cheaper for the same specs.

Out of interest, why are you after a laptop? Is there some other necessity that you haven't mentioned so far, since you can probably get either

    1) a desktop with the same specs cheaper or
    2) a desktop with better specs for the same price.
    Conjugating the verb 'to be":
-o I am humble -o You are attention seeking -o She is Nadine Dorries
  • Hi, no my desktop I'm using now is perfect - however, we just have a lack of sapce and it seems to dominate the room. My Mum wants a desktop so she will have mine and then I will use a laptop. Thats the only reason really.

Are Acers just as good do you think?

Yes generally if I'm not building a new computer I'll go for an acer, their laptops are cheap and sturdy and its not like the components will be that different. Intel is Intel no matter the name of the manufacturer.
