Email glitches

Hi peeps,

I have Firefly and Onetel as dialup providers.

I've tried sending emails with Firefly but they rarely send unless I remove Onetel. They always send with Onetel whether its the default or not.

I've tried every reinstallation sequence of the providers to remove any glitches.

Firefly don't make a charge to go online.
Thanks for any ideas.

I'm not 100% sure of the problem here.

Are you saying that you can't send emails when you're connected to Firefly, but you can when you're connected to Onetel?

If that's the case, I'll take a stab at the reason:
Firstly - who is your original ISP? What's the ending of your email address?

If you have a Onetel email address, it's probably that their email servers will not accept a connection from a different dialup provider. When you dialup with Firefly, you won't be connecting with a Onetel recognised username and password, so you won't get access to their email servers.
  • A bit more info is needed.

Which email program are you using? Outlook Express?

    What's your operating system?

When you say 'remove Onetel', what exactly are you removing or uninstalling?

What error message(s), if any, do you get when you try to send with Firefly? The exact text of the message will help.

    Indie girl,
I'm saying that when connected to Firefly and I try and send an email, they only send intermittantly, and the ones that don't go I get an error report.
Onetel was my original provider and the address ends .com and Firefly address ends .net

    Chippy Minton,
I'm using Outlook Express and Windows XP.
I had uninstalled both providers afresh to try and remove any glitches, and before that I removed Onetel from Outlook Express accounts to see if Firefly would send more reliably but it only sent intermittantly
I can't remember what the error message said, and I've just now sent a Firefly test email which went for a change so I can't paste the error message copy just yet.

Hope this is not too confusing.

  • The error message probably contains something like 'Relay access denied', which means that you can't send email from your My.Name @ fireflyuk.net account when you're dialled up to Onetel and vice versa (as indiegirl guesses). If you want to send emails from My.Name @ fireflyuk.net you must be dialled up to Firefly.

Make sure both your email accounts are set up in OE, according to your ISPs' instructions. Make sure that Firefly is your default account as that's the one you'd like to use most: Tools - Accounts - Mail tab - select Firefly - Set as Default.

Now, in OE when you create a new message you'll see My.Name @ fireflyuk.net as the From: address. That's fine when you're dialled up to Firefly, but if you're on Onetel, you must change it to My.Name @ onetel.com. Simply click on the From: dropdown list and select My.Name @ onetel.com.

Try sending a test message to yourself when dialled up to each ISP, making sure that it leaves your Outbox. You should be able to receive emails from both addresses whichever ISP you're connected to.

    Chippie Minton,

Have just had another failed email using Firefly to send test message to my onetel address. Here is the report.

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'mail.onetel.com', Server: 'mail.onetel.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

Why it should refer to Ontel inactivity when I use onetel because of this problem beats me.

As I have already said, I've tried sending test messages before which sometime go and sometimes fail when using Firefly, but do not fail when sent with onetel.

Hope this sheds some light. Thanks for bearing with me.

Hi there, as I have been busy investigating my email tonight - I am on wanadoo and using outlook express- I just read your post and whilst I can't really be of any help I thought I might just add an observation.

I have been having problems with internet connection and also Outlook Express - and the message you got is almost the same as I have several times in respect of my wanadoo emails - & exact same Error No.
So on that basis I would say that message is not specific to onetel or firefly - its just something that applies to email connection problems.

    Hope you get it sorted.

    Dizzydux,
Maybe its a common problem with isp's clashing if that is what it is, but its probably something more prosaic as you say. Thanks for your interest.

    Chippie Minton,
I'll try what you said and what your link prompts me to do, if I understand it correctly, to mean I just type in username@ fireflyuk.net, instead of me @fireflyuk.net

have to go now as the bairns making a racket. get back to you later today hopefully.

    thanks again.

    Chippie minton,

Ignore above stuff about typing username instead of my firefly address I was a bit tired.

I did as you requested and re-entered the account without removing the original account. The new firefly account had a 1 after it.I then followed your advice about using the drop down boxes. The tests were successful. What I can't fathom out is why previously some of the Firefly emails sometime went regardless of what I've done since.
I wonder if this new account with the number 1 after has anything to do with it or just using the drop down boxes, as I checked through both Firefly accounts settings to see if they matched before deleting the original first account.

Chippie Minton, Indie girl and Dizzydux. thanks for your help in getting rid of the Onetel log on charge.
