getting out of AOL contract

Does anyone know the common/case law about how much an internet supplier can charge you for cancelling the contract? I entered an 18-month one with AOL in February 08 (was ill at the time and didn't respond in the required 7 days to cancel) and now they want £187 cancellation fee for the remaining 10 months of the contract. One AOL man once told me they couldn't charge the full amount. Has any one just cancelled their direct debit with the bank and waited to see what happened!

You agreed to them charging early termination fees when you took out the deal. They will be able to charge you for the remaining months in your 18 month minimum period.
You can cancel your direct debit at any time. But they will still bill you and if you don't pay will chase you for the debt.0
