I like the stuff at the carbonneutral.com site - look at the shop here. Definitely different.

My friend had a baby on saturday and the present was all ready before the birth i bought a Kipper (anyone with kids will know who that is) storage box and filled it with allsorts of essentials such as nappies, bottom creams, weaning tubs, burping cloths etc any a well deserved box of chocs for mum it was really appreciated and was different from the 8 teddies that she had already recieved!
  • I had my first child in January so christmas wasn`t until She was 11 months old. I would have liked to have been given toys for a 9mth to a year. All she got was soft toys, not even clothes as my friends said that they knew that I could sew!So I could but not with a newborn.
My MIL gave her a toddle truck in June as she was an early walker and couldnt wait until Christmas. My son was born in May and as well as all his sisters toys Christmas came at a better time for him

What about a casting kit for feet & hands?

    http://www.wrightsonandplatt.com/babyfeet.html?origin=aw3

Just did a quick search... maybe available cheaper.

    Edit... definately will get cheaper!
we got these from hawkins when had son (now 3) - we had to cast his foot as every time we tried to do his hand he scrunched it up & it took ages to get him to let go & get the clay off!!!

Go to the supermarket and do a box of treats for the parents.

Bottle of wine or champagne, biscuits, chocolates, decent coffee etc or if they are breastfeeding make it expensive fruit, etc. You can adapt it to your budget so works well for anyone. Treats that they would not otherwise be having is the aim.

When you are getting no sleep and going shopping is hard work with a newborn then someone thinking about you like this is just such a kind thing to do.

    Hope this helps

my sis got me a photography voucher for andree images, it's similar to venture. the voucher costs £25 and is for a photography session and one framed photo, with the option to take out a second mortgage for overpriced additional photos.

Only today my son received his special £5 Nelson coin from the royal mint and I noticed thay do a special pack of all this years coins in a presentation box, including the special Nelson £5 coin for about £19.99. This is designed for a new baby and gives you space to write the baby's name, weight etc. It seems like a real keep sake and could improve in value as the years pass by!

The best thing that was given to me was a 'plot a tot'. Its a wall chart split in to 12 months which you stick stickers on to mark when the new baby does things.... ie sleeps through, rolls over. It also has stickers to fill in its weight and to mark when it has its injections.

You can buy online here for £6.99 each. However a local baby shop near me sells them for £1.99 so it is best to shop around.

I give them out as presents now and have had loads of comments about how original and useful they are!
