Thanks for the input guys. The Vauxhall Corsa I'm buying can't be an import, since Vauxhalls are known as Opels outside the UK.

Motorpoint are well know for changing the Opel badges and replacing them with Vauxhall ones.

Phone them asn adk them to give you the chassis number, then phone a vauxhall garage and ask them to tell you what it is...

To answer your Q, a verbal agreement is worth nothing in a court of law.
Verbal contracts are upheld in court, but evidence will be required that what was said, was actually said. For example the OP might have made a note of the description and the name of the salesman he was speaking to on the phone.

I wouldn't have put a deposit down before knowing everything about the car & viewing it - When you (OP) buy the car, make them declare in the paperwork that they guarantee the car is not an import, if it is, why has it got vauxhall badges then?

I believe if they changed the badges that would be an offence to sell the car without telling the buyer that it was an import. If they deny all knowledge and you confirm with Vauxhall it is an import and you give them evidence to support that claim, then they must subsequently describe the car as an import for other customers. If they don't do this inform trading standards.

You can get sets of badges for Vauxhalls - front grill, rear boot and the steering wheel. Motorpoint are big on imports and these are likely to only have 2 years warranty from new. It's no big deal if you factor in a decent aftermarket warranty onto the price or are willing to take the risk.

    Just an update..

Bought the car from Motorpoint. Love it.

It's a Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 Design 5 door, in Air Blue. Car is a UK model, not an import, as per the V5, DVLA, and Vauxhall. She is 4 months old, has 1050 miles on her, and the remainder of the Vauxhall 3 year warranty. Cost £8495.

Can't fault Motorpoint. Very honest and straight taking. They tell it like it was. I was traveling a long way to their Newport branch, and I asked them, honestly, what's the condition of the car. Adam (the salesman I dealt with), told me that being only 4 months old, it is as immaculate as could be expected, but told me to bear in mind that it has been driven, so may have the odd stone chip here or there. When I picked up the car, however, it was actually immaculate! Didn't have any stone chips, scratches or other defects anywhere (I checked very thoroughly). But I appreciated Adam's honesty, and am glad that he didn't bullsh1t me, and instead left me with a pleasant surprise.

Motorpoint are a very professional and large outfit. Cheap cars and fast turnover. They do specialise in imported vehicles (they say so quite clearly on their paperwork). But mine wasn't an import and I'm very happy with my car. Similar cars elsewhere (other car supermarkets / Vauxhall dealers) are at least a grand more.

There's £86 to pay to Motorpoint on top of the price of the car. I didn't try to get this waived, but I think I should have, in hindsight. £25 of the charge is for Euro plates (the original non-Euro plates are then discarded), and the remaining £61 is for valeting / HPI check. Who needs Euro plates? Maybe if you're going abroad, but I'd have preferred to have a choice. And I could have got them cheaper than £25 as well. £61 for valet and HPI check. Ok. HPI check is useful and I wouldn't have not had it done. But the valet was pretty non-existent. Ok, the car's immaculate, but if it had been valeted there wouldn't have been dust on the dash now, would there? Wish I'd have quizzed them about the valet to be honest. But anyway, I'm not going to lose any sleep over a bit of dust..

I was altogether very pleased with Motorpoint. They give 7 days free insurance with Norwich Union. Handy, because all Motorpoint's cars are sold without road tax, so the free insurance cover note was just what I needed to go and tax the car at the local post office. I'll be the 2nd owner on the log book.

The staff were great. Really chatty and down to earth. I was given directions and a map to the post office to get the road tax, and the same for the local Tesco petrol station.

I'll use Motorpoint again, definitely.
