I remembered your last cry for help because after five different posters answered your thread, you could not even be bothered to return to the thread and update us!

I had thanked everyone and never realised there were more replies. I always appreciate advice from these forums but looking after my kids comes first, so I can't always check back and comment and I just don't get chance. Apologies if this offended you.

    What is REN btw?

It stands for Ringer Equivalency Number.

Basically it means the amount of power each phone takes from the phone line, which is usually restricted by your local exchange.

Unless you've got a house chock full of pretty old phones, it's unlikely to be the issue.

After two TalkTalk people saying I needed to test unplug things and unscrew things - my husband has just called them and straight away they said it was a 9/10 chance it was a fault with the line that they could sort out at the exchange.

They've done a test and this is the case. Relieved that we don't have to pay £140 (I hope! So far..) but also curious as to why he immediately got someone who said they'd do a line test and I got two who made me unscrew the box in the hallway and unplug filters etc and never mentioned line tests?

Hmmm. Anyway. If you do have a problem with TalkTalk's landline, I guess the moral is either ring four times and speak to different people and you might get somewhere, or get your husband to call??

Making a mental note to look into changing suppliers...will see who's recommended service wise first this time though, I think.

Ta again to those who gave me the useful advice, I really do appreciate it!
    Best wishes
