My son was attacked by a staffie , he was sitting on his friends doorstep talking to his friend when he heard get the dog as he turned to look there dog come bounding towards all teeth showing and as he tried to get up out the way it got his ear and basically ripped it from his head , my sons friend older brother managed to get the dog off him and my son ran all the way home by himself his ear was just hanging by the lobe and spurting blood due to his running and panic , i ran an ambulance and he was rushed to hospital where they re-attached it fully although he is scarred for life and he hates anyone touching his ear .
The main reason i wanted to tell you this was the police involvement , the next morning the police arrived after being informed by the hospital (although i was going to call them) they expected it just to be a little nip and the policeman was quite shocked when he saw my sons ear , he said because the dog was on its own property that the police couldnt force the owners to put the dog to sleep but could only advise i found this truly shocking , anyway the owner did get the dog put to sleep on the condition that i wouldnt take it further (try and get compensition) this hadnt even crossed my mind the only thing that bothered me was the fact the dog didnt hurt another.
I dont think you can fully trust any dog no matter what breed and although i have a dog (cross) and she is fully grown and smaller than my cat , i always keep her on the lead apart from in my back garden where there is no-way out and if strangers come to my home (eg workman etc i dont just allow random strangers in lol) i lock her in another room till they go , i really dont believe she could hurt a fly but with what happened to my son it changed my views.
I dont think the police would even look into it with your case as you said the other dog wasnt injured so what can they actually tell the police.
hope this trainer helps you , but like others have said dont let your dog of the lead as it may not be what your dog does but another dog that comes from no-where at your dog and your dog may come off worst.safc forever

I mean this is in the nicest way - honestly I do (I own a mad-eyed Springer  ) - but .... pay attention. Watch the trainer, not the dog. It's you that's being trained here
Been there, done thatDo, please .... learn from the trainer

I read this thread with interest and just wanted to say that I really would strongly urge you to keep your dog on a lead AND muzzled every time you are in public - and by in public I do also include your friend's wood. I would recomend a box style mussle that he can still pant in. Tough luck if the dog doesn't like the lead - better exercised on the lead (do you have an extendable one?) than dead because it bit off more than it could chew with another dog that got nasty. I'm sure he'd get used to exercise on the lead if that was the rule.
The muzzle would both help to indicate to other dog owners to keep their distance, and be evidence that you have taken all reasonable precautions should the unthinkable happen and somebody prosecute you because your dog injured theirs. This dog has a history of violence towards other dogs, so do your best to protect both itself and other dogs by keeping it on a lead and muzzled, please. And a halti isn't a muzzle unless its fitted incorrectly, in which case its use as a halti is cruel.
Some of the other replies are getting ridiculious.0 -
hi, the police can only have your dog pts if he bites a HUMAN.
this seems very much to be the other dog starting + your staffy not putting up with it which is sad when it is our breed who get the blame.
your was under control + only retaliated after all.
good luck, jo0 -
I own 2 soppy mongrel dogs. Live in Lambeth, South London. I am so sick of the threat to my dogs from staffs and similar breeds. December 2008 my small innocuous dog was attacked by 2 supposedly "nice" staffs, their owner was shocked and apologetic, but that's no consolation to my dog. Chunk out of his side, has now recovered physically, but not the same dog.
I have no problem if it became law that dogs should wear muzzles in public. The danger of attack by staffs and similar breeds not only to other dogs but to kids and the general public would be significantly reduced.

I'd like to see them ALL muzzled too, all Dogs not just Staffs if off lead. It's not just Staffs, my Staff was attacked badly by a Collie or Collie x & came off alot worse while he didn't have a mark on him, so breed is irrelevant, the Owners are the ones I worry about. Also, why drag up an ancient thread?0
