  • And how can she gift anything if she only has £1000 left? And also she could have applied when she had £6000 left, she didn't need to spend it all.I think this is a bit strange.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

You already asked this question a month ago, and you were advised that, in the circumstances, you needed to seek professional advice. Have you not done this?

Is it the citizens advice or somewhere that we see? Or other professional,

    Many thanks,

    Simon

Yes, see a Welfare Rights Officer or Benefits Advisor at the CAB.

Does anyone know if there is a penalty for 'under-occupation' in the new rules/rates for private rental Housing benefit in Scotland? I can't find an answer on websites. I don't know if I should look into renting 2 bedroom properties which fall within their payment thresholds. I know that I am only 'entitled' to one bedroom, and previously I was made to pay the excess for renting a 2 bedroom while living on my own. Does this principle still apply now the rates have changed to fixed bands - would they make me pay the equivalent of the extra bedroom?
    Thanks

    hello
My father-in-law (81) was receiving housing benefit for his privately rented flat. He lives with his daughter (50) who has learning difficulties and receives disability living allowance. His eldest daughter (Irene) has now moved back in to help care for them both; her father's health is worsened and he cannot cope with looking after his other daughter who needs daily supervision.

Since informing the council of the new living arrangements, they have written to say that the HB may be suspended. Irene has taken a part time job at a local supermarket to support herself, but obviously does not pay her father rent. She earns about £150/week net.

Her father is receiving attendence allowance and applying for pension credit.

Do you think the HB will get stopped? Or reduced? Any advice on how to go about this with the council?

Regarding my question above, I have since confirmed with a CAB advisor (by phone), that the attendence allowance means that the HB should not be affected, even though a non-dependent is living in the property and working.

I have also confirmed this through other resources, such as Shelter.org.

The CAB seem to be an excellent resource and I highly recommend them if people are worried about benefits. At least now we can approach the council with the correct information in hand!
  • Hi, I don't know if I am posting in the right section but thought I would give it a try anyway. I have just started an Access to HE course which is a full time course but am able to keep working at my 21hr per week job (for which I get Working Tax Credits and Child Tax Credits including the lone parent element and childcare elements). My question is, will I now qualify for Council Tax benefit (other than the 25% single occupancy I already get), and if I do - will this affect my tax credits? I am so confused by it all!

Any information would be most welcome!

    Thanks a million,
    Vicky
  • im living with my parents at the moment
im a part time student with the OU and i work less than 16 hours a week and i claim
    £12 a week jobseekers allowance
unfortunatly i cannot afford to contribute anything toward my keep.
so i was wondering if i can claim housing benefit and if so would my parents have to draw up a contract

I've only just seen your post. If you're a full time student and the only person over 18 in your household then you'll be exempt from paying council tax.
