Yabb in crisis

Options
Well it's finally happened. Yabb is creaking at the number of posts.

We are taking some crisis measures

1. Recent posts has been reduced to a max of 100. Regulars will know there is a way to do more in advanced search but keep it to a minimum.
2. Please delete all your large stores of PMs

We are working on other temp measures then going to try and return them once we've solved the main problem.

    OK crisis measure 2

When you press reply you cannot see previous posts. This has had a dramatic impact on the site traffic and really helped.

As such recent posts has now been moved up to 200.

    Your views on 'reply'

While getting rid of the 'view previous posts' in reply, will make it a little more difficult for some, it will make it much easier for those on dial up to engage in discussions (it's very slow on longer posts). It will also mean we don't have to keep moving to a new discussion e.g. Argos - it can now have 500 pages and not be a problem (much less boards for the board guides).

We are considering showing the first post (and possibly last post) when you click reply.

    Any thoughts

Yeah I have noticed those changes!

It has seemed really slow tonight and I keep getting that error message saying the document cannot be found.....

    - is the site a victum of its own success? :-/
  • I would like to be able to see the last post when hitting reply as invariably that would be the post I was replying to. No need for the first particularly if its a long thread as by then it might not be relevant to what you are posting.

Mainly though I would like to see an end to the huge all singing, all dancing signatures that take an age to appear and detract from the posts you are trying to read.

perhaps time to cut out some of the pictures and older threads on the
MSA, Discussion and referrers sections ?

I always look at last post as that usually what I'm replying to. It's nice to have it as a reminder when your mind is like a sieve :-[

I missed it tonight when I couldn't find it :(
Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...

I have replied to this using the quote button on the post that I am replying to which will help me remember what I am talking about. I hope.

yep def was in crisis :o:o a victim of its own success

i agree show last post and first post, when reply or quote button is hit

also is it worth reducing amount of text allowed in each message..... some seem to go on n on for ages...! ;)

200 max posts isnt enough for me..... I check the board several times a day, 500 was starting to miss minutes stretching to hours at busy times.

notify of replies could recify part of that (if it worked!)
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

    difinitely :)

If notifiy of replys worked properly it would significantly reduce the amount of pages I use - I'm always having to check if new posts have been made

I too would like to see an end to images in signatures - they're not too bad right now but I could see it really getting out of hand
  • Not sure if it was Pal or Payless that suggested that signatures be done away with altogether which would sort the problem of referral links and animated or scrolling signatures.

Flashing and scrolling signatures really do cause problems with my eye sight as do animated avators after some time reading through a thread.

Perhaps signatures could be authorised by MSE for people such as Payless who are actually offering a service and not just a referral for money which after all should be in the Referral Board.

cheers but I would not expect any special treatment-
if they go, they all go !

I would just paste a small disclaimer on each post that involved a potentially regulated product area.
( think most people realise that my primary reason for posting is not a money making thing)

Also I would have no problem if the referrers section ended - again whilst I use it, ( beacuse its there) if it had to end ( and maybe not a bad idea IM0) to assist the smooth running of the site, then so be it
