Hi,
I was wondering what money-saving solutions people have for storing things? I'm about to move into a new (rented) flat. There's no box room (nor was there in any of the flats I saw and I saw about a dozen) so I've got a few things that I don't know where I'm going to keep. Self storage seems to run from about £10-£20 p/w.
Thanks,
Dawn

I haven't.
And in all honesty the storage for our stuff over the last few years has been more than the financial value of the stuff. There comes a point when I think one has to consider what the 'worth' of the stuff is and why one can't accomodate it!0 -
What exactly are the things you don't have room for?If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

we got quoted 300pcm for the contents of a 2 bed house. Luckily I managed to wangle some storage for a short while with a contact, so managed to get it free, but that was really bonus.
I would seriously weigh up the value of these items, could you sell them now, to minimise expenditure over the next TA? Guess it depends what they are I suppose:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
We had a quote of £40p/w for a very small storage area when we wanted to 'declutter' for selling our place.
No way were we paying that, didn't know at the time how long it might take to sell - so we borrowed
one of OH's parents spare bedrooms and stashed the stuff there.

Save money and have a lovely tidy house by selling stuff that you don't use, giving it away to charity or just binning it.
I cannot see the point of self-storage companies unless you are between places. If it isn't important enough to be in my house, then I'm certainly not paying for it to be held outside my house!
Get rid of it!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

A friend of mine who was getting divorced made the following rules:
1. EBAY it.
2. If it doesn't sell take it to two carboots.
3. If it doesn't sell - straight to the tip.
You might try freecycle between 2 and 3.0 -
Storage is expensive if it's tat. And most of the time it is.
Anything you can't palm off to relatives you should sell/give to charity/freecycle
Try it even if you're not going to put stuff in storage. Put all your stuff into boxes and seal them. Anything you've not used after 3 months you can safely get rid of.0 -
I store all unneeded items on Ebay, its free .. you even have a chance to get a better item back for the same money later on ..All my life my mother told me the storm was coming (c) Terminator 30

Hm, I am not sure its a good idea if you have e.g. ski-related stuff there ..All my life my mother told me the storm was coming (c) Terminator 30 -
Just a little explanation why we are storing....because sometimes worth is more than finances.
I have clothes (designer one ofs etc) that were given to be that probably won't be the 'investment pieces' that some people think they will be but do save my sanity as they remind me who I used to be.
I have returned to live with parents, so our furniture and many of our personal beliongings just won't fit in their house with their stuff too. These are many antiques of minor value financially but big sentimental worth. In cluding lots of stuff that was DHs deceased mother's. Its true we have to rationalise (we pay £50 for four large storage conatiners, I think, so it might be a MSE thing to get it store away from an urban area in a private rather than big company) but I think the emotional costs of over rationalising too early might be greater than the financial saving. Obviously, if things get tighter this is a first line of attack. But one day we will have a home of our own and having things that contain memories is valuable to us.
