Emergency Travel to Melbourne for Funeral

We have had a death in the family, and after sorting out all our travel doc's, it looks like I'll have everything sorted and issued on Monday.

Just did a quick check with Qantas and I am gobsmacked ... £ 4,000

Where can I go to find cheapest flights.

I need to go from Monday evening, and will probably stay until end of August ...

oh, its for me, 2 children + 1 infant

Sorry to hear about the funeral.

Moving onto practical matters, Monday is horrible, almost everything is completely sold. It's peak of the peak travel time (schools just broke up as i'm sure you know)

If Qantas offered £4000 for all of you, I would snap their hand off.

If not, when would be the latest you can travel?

Think that was only next Friday, but now I have lost the quote.

Need to nip out and get a passport application form, and clear my head a bit
  • some airlines do a special rate for such urgencies....if it is someone very close to you and I guess it is or you would not be going so far, you may well need to produce a copy of the death certificate but it may well be worth ringing some direct, because looking at the prices you wont get cheaper.

    Sorry for your loss..

I'll agree with everyone else now, that if Quantas has offered you a cost of £4000 for all of you to go, then it is a good price..

just searching around, all I can find for a monday evening departure is £1906 adult, £1512 child, £409 infant, so it comes to £5342... can't find anything else...

Did you say you don't have a passport?

Don't book a flight until you have contacted the passport agency and are SURE that they can issue a passport in time for your journey. A new passport can take as long as two months; you can't travel without one; and if you buy an air ticket you can't use you won't even get a refund.

    So sorry.

Can't help with the flights but don't forget your australian visas too. You can buy them online direct from the Aussie Government.

I suggest you phone Qantas, BA, Singapore airlines (and possibly others) and try and appeal to the operator for a better proce given your circumstances. Gotta be worth a try.

I would urge you to forget the airlines, and find a decent travel company who can look at the availability of every airline to Melbourne in the time in takes you to find their phone numbers. And then put your names to seats the moment something is found. You'll know a good TA when they want to help you. Try Trailfinders and the usual suspects.

Passports and visas are essential. You should check that you'll have them in time otherwise you can't go. I hope all goes well for you - not easy for you in the circumstances.

  • doubt that travel agents will be able to find you a bereavement rate, airlines do do them, so please try them as you really will need to do it directly...

    look at this

  • I've looked on here - insomnia - so it gave me something to do.

Cheapest I've found so far is Emirates £3796.20 for all of you. That is flying Monday from Heathrow. Might be worth giving them a ring for bereavement fares.
SOME airlines will only let you travel with 2 children - be aware!

Sorry to hear about your bereavement & hope you can get things sorted. I'll see if I can find any promotion codes for you.
