Turkish Lira - Cheaper to exchange here or in turkey?

I am off to turkey in a couple of weeks for a 2 week holiday.
Obviously I am after some turkish Lira, and someone told me that it works out cheaper to exchange sterling to lira once in turkey as you get a better exchange rate over in turkey. is this correct? or should i exchange before i go?

It has always been better to exchange in Turkey rather than here. They take sterling in most shops and restaurants too.

Also don't forget the Nationwide debit card which is safer and better value than cash.

Where was it 2.47 ttoli? We went to Hisaronu 21/7-03/08 and it was 2.31 there and then went down to 2.2 after we had been there a week. Ex rate in UK was 2.31ish when we left so we would have been better changing 1/2 to Lira in England. You could pay for some things in £ and get a better deal, like in the markets and some shops but we couldn't find a better ex rate in Turkey. Not sure if rate in Marmaris etc would be higher?

When I've been to Turkey they are happy to take English notes and Euro's on top of Lira. I use my leftover Euro's when I'm there!
