Anyone live on a busy road?

I used to rent a house on a busy road in a town centre and would never again! Noise wasn't too bad when the windows were closed, but a nightmare in the summer when the windows were open. And the drunks were never too quiet either!! My dog used to bark like mad everytime someone walked past. The house we bought last year is in a small cul-de-sac and our garden backs onto fields - bliss! The only sound we hear now is the occassional neighing of a horse!! The dog now knows everyone who lives in the street and so only barks at non-residents which the neighbours have told me is a good thing - the local guard dog!!0

Not an (A) road, but lived on a busy road, no problems with Double Glazing. Does quieten down over the weekends.. well ours did anyways. Given the posts ive seen over the last week too, may I congratulate you on raising this before purchase, rather than moving in and then complaining that "there is a busy road" (Rant over)0

We are going to go back at a different time of day to see how its is then, but to be honest i think its a no for me. Which is a shame as i realy like the house but i have always said my main priotiry is the area so best stick to it especialy as i doesnt look like i could sell it again anytime soon
Thanks AJ1982. I am trying to look into everything the best i can because i want to be happy in my next house for a very long time.

Hi Lauren. Hope you are still watching this, I have just seen it.
Agree with all people say about living on a busy road (we do). The worst factor is not noise but pollution. A sticky black film everywhere, although I wonder is there is a place in London where you do not get this nowadays. Rubbish in the front garden is another issue --most annoying since it shows contempt both for the others and the environment.
The fact is, unless you have a very high budget or can afford to leave wherever you choose (instead of juggling preferences and commuting options) you can't have everything, and you can get more for your money when a house is on a busy road --a bigger or better house, a bigger garden, etc. Which is the reason why a lot of us live on a busy road.
A lot will depend on the type of house AND surrounding roads. For instance, the more solid the house the more it will block the noise. Also, you can leave on a quiet road but have a noisy one at the back of the house, for instance, or the side, and it can be even worse.
So you'll have to weigh all the options. Good luck!0 -
Thanks Nikiya,
Yep im still watching, need all the advice i can get. Im realy indecisive
You are right! i never thought i would beable to afford a house with so much space and nice garden ect.
There is a plus point the back garden backs onto a private road so not much noise if i want to do my gardening on the back hehe
Hmmm this house buying lark is stressfull lol
thanks again :beer:0 -
There you are.... we also have a generous garden and when you are there you would never know our house is on a busy road.... could never afford it on a quiet cul de sac...0
