Help!!! My computer has stopped working!!!

Options
Hi,
I went to pick the children up from school and when I returned, my computer (laptop) was just not responding!!!

I shut it off and restarted it and then this message came up....

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If the problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced start up Options, and then select safe mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x000000ED (Ox82359030, 0xC0000006,0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I have done what it said,
I've restarted it in safe mode and all the other options but it just keeps coming back to this page! . It just won't open up into windows!!

Please help!!!!
Thank you!!

I've googled the technical problems listed and they seem to be repairable by downloading "regcure" but how do you download it if you can't open windows:confused:

    You can't ^

I think you need to use a boot CD to repair the installation. Do you have the original Windows CD there? You'll need to go into BIOS (tap either f2 or f8 during boot up) to configure the boot source (you'll change it from hard drive to CD).

Don't do it yet though, as I am not 100% certain this is the solution - wait for somebody else to confirm/rubbish this!

it depends. The message can be a symptom of a dying hard disk, but far more likely is that it is a logical corruption (eg corrupt registry) caused by not shutting down cleanly.

you need to get hold of a windows CD (not a restore CD) to start diagnosis. boot from it, go into recovery console, and run

    chkdsk c: /p /r
To the OP. Ja, follow this information!

If you don't have a Windows CD ask some of your friends. It's pretty simple to do, and you shouldn't need to pay to have it fixed.

    Keep us updated.

Alternatively you can use linux boot CD's, but it is a little more long winded.
Thanks for this! Have spent the last 2 hours trying to do the above but not getting anywhere!!

I did a diagnostic test and no problems were found!?
I think I might have to take it somewhere to get it repaired:o

    Is this Vista or XP?
Your data should be safe so don't worry about that. At worst, the repair shop will remove your hard drive and back everything up and reinstall windows.

For XP (and maybe Vista, not tried it yet!) Usually puttng your windows CD in, and going to recovery console by pressing R when prompted and then press '1' and enter, and type in the chkdsk command as shown above exactly, and press enter. Should windows not load when rebooting, again enter recovery mode, and press 'R' followed by '1' and enter
    type in
    fixmbr

Again restart, and should that not work, do the same as above but instead of typing fixmbr, type in

    fixboot.

Hopefully one of these options will work, if not then take it to a repair shop or beg a techie friend to have a look.

    Thanks!

Its XP and a Dell laptop.
They never sent me a windows cd (only the reinstallation cd) and there is no recovery prompt that I can see??:o I've tried all the F buttons to open different menus etc but no recovery that I can see??:o
My next problem is finding a good local techie place, that's not going to over charge me!!
