I lose my drivers side mirror reguarly. Everything else survives, just the glass falls out normally.
(Usually when I hit cars that overtake parked cars on their side of the road. I keep going, so do they).
It's about £10 for a stick on real glass mirror, they work fairly well with the heater.

Not all mirrors on all vehicles are subject to Test, depending on the age of the vehicle. Those mirrors which must be checked must be
    • secure
    • visible from the driver's seat
    • not distorted or damaged so as to seriously impair the driver's view to the rear.
    Obligatory mirror options are:
    a. an exterior mirror fitted to the offside (right-hand side when seated in the driver’s seat), or
    b. an exterior mirror fitted to the nearside (left hand side when seated in the driver’s seat), or
    c. an interior mirror.

All goods vehicles must have two mirrors, one of which must be option ‘a’.

Passenger vehicles with no more than 7 passenger seats first used before 1 August 1978 must have any one of the above options.

Wouldn’t have though there are that many pre 1978 cars about so more relevantly, any vehicle first used after 1978 must have option a. and least one of b. or c.

One of mine passed with just option c.

    (It is from 1967 though)

Had it been the passenger side - broken, and you have an interior mirror and a driver side mirror and you patched up any sharp edges with duct tape you would have been fine.

As it is, stick a new mirror on top of the broken one and patch it up with duct tape and it should pass.
