Suggestions for getting usage down?

    Hi

For your heaters, make sure that you have your input set somewhere in the middle and your output down to minimum during the night and when you are not in the house.

Storage heaters will still give off some heat when the output is at minimum but it means that you won't be wasting the heat when you are not in the room. When you are in the room just turn the dial up and it will let more heat out.

In terms of your boiler, I would have the bottom one on all the time as this will heat the water over night which will mean hubby can shave in the morning and the water heats at the lower rate. The water will still stay hot for a lot of the day. For Sunday bath time you might need to use the boost button for an hour of so to give extra hot water.
  • With respect,

Usually said before someone aims something disrespectful at someone...
until you have used one IMO you are not really qualified to say this.

I don't see what on earth that has to do with anything. I haven't used a lot of things but that doesn't mean I cannot comment on my views on those things. Simply using something doesn't automatically 'qualify' you to do anything.
Agreed, the unit in itself does nothing to save fuel,

    Exactly what I said.
but a constant readout of the fuel you are using is THE best way to modify your habits. If evey car had a constant readout of the cost being incurred I reckon it would also change many people's idea of what constituted a 'must do' journey. The Owl will DEFINITELY save our household more than its cost within the first year. Therefore, it isn't a waste of money in any way.

And I don't understand the last paragraph at all

The last paragraph summises what you've just said - the device doesn't have anything to do with saving power. It just changes your perception of power. And if you can't understand turning something on costs money and you need a £50 device to tell you that, that's up to you. I don't need to spend £50 on something to tell me it uses power, I know it costs a lot of money to boil water I don't need in a kettle or stand under the shower for ages so I just don't do these things. Therefore in my household people's habits don't need altering as we're already aware anything electrical should be used wisely.
PS Nice to see the ignore list function works, I can't see espresso's post at all. :rotfl:

For someone who's been on here less than three weeks I personally don't think it's of merit to say you're already ignoring someone, I welcome everyone's views on an equal basis rather than building walls. I'm sorry you don't appear to be able to do the same.

CitySlicker, Espresso is on ignore for reasons of forum harmony, you only have to observe what he's called me on another thread (in the only post of his I can actually see!) to realise putting him on ignore is a wholly reasonable action. His name does tend to crop up on threads shortly after I've posted then he has the temerity to call me a troll.

And what does my being on here for 3 weeks have to do with anything? Some would make the point you have a very low post count since you registered 19 months ago so shouldn't really be giving advice but, of course, I wouldn't be one of those people, lol.

PS It was £35, not £50. And if you think it's a waste of money, fine. For some people I'm sure it will be.

Lowest price I've been able to find for the OWL £31.99 http://www.britishgasproducts.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=55&osCsid=e9e03d4b82b7688e6ef867c7308df41c

Is that site kosher? Would all depend on the P&P as John Lewis's price is £34.95 delivered.

It doesn't say either way, and I haven't quite decided yet whether to buy it, so I've sent them a query and will let you know when I get a reply! It's part of British Gas - you get to it through their website, and its linked to their Generation Green project and the energy savers report.

    >I doubt if the OWL is even sensitive enough to measure the energy consumed by a mobile charging.<

My Maplin power meter can't get a wattage from my Nokia charger. I've assumed 1W which equals less than 50p per quarter.

I've just seen that. I have to say it looks like it was knocked up in MS Publisher! :D I personally haven't seen anyone on here who has one who doesn't rate it highly (a few 'experts' who haven't used it who seem to think it's a waste of money, of course ;) ). The efergy one is £5 more but also has a memory function so that may be worth considering.

Cracked it - it was the heaters!!

I've taken another reading today and after switching them all off, A rate has dropped by 1kwh per day and B rate by a whopping 22kwh per day to 3

Now have to work out the most economical way to keep us warm during north Scotland winters....

    Thanks everyone

I've had a response, and P&P for the owl is £2.95.
