Hi Lally,
It sounds like you've got loads of programs that are set to start automatically. You can fairly easily control what starts and doesn't by going to <Start>/<Run> and typing msconfig. Select the 'Startup' tab and unclick any programs that you don't want to start.
This maybe a useful link http://www.tweakxp.com/performance_tweaks.aspx, some of the tips are straightforward, some require registry changes that you might not be comfortable with.
Windows XP has a load of background services that are set to automatically start at reboot - there are a lot of these that aren't needed for most users and can slow down system startup. Have a look at the website and it should give you some pointers as to what services can be set to manual or even disabled.
