  • I'm in catch 22. I'm at the end of my maternity. I'm starting a new job. My lb will have to go into childcare so I can work. I am eligible for child element of working tax credit however they won't start until the lb is attending child care. The childcare provider wants a month upfront paid which is over £500. I haven't got this kind of money. I don't no what to do! I need to start work ASAP or I can't pay my mortgage. I understand why they want paying a month upfront I'm not disputing this. Are there grants available or childcare loans etc? Please help.

Would your employer perhaps be able to offer you a temporary loan?
  • I will ask them. But I don't think they will it is a small business I don't no them and they don't no me. So it would be a big risk on there side. But I will ask them.
  • It was a no as they don't no me enough. What do people reckon to me paying it on a credit card? I have never had one before and not quite sure what they entail. But I'm thinking it may be more manageable than a loan? Any ideas?
  • Hi, I was wondering for an answer to hopefully an easy question(!)

I have two children aged 2.5yrs and 9 months and going back to work shortly. Since I have been off on maternity my company have started doing childcare vouchers through Edenred.

As my Husband is self employed I have looked and the new Childcare Tax Free vouchers which is coming next year is the better option for my family. I have checked with the nursery and they haven't received the HMRC letter to set up the Tax Free Vouchers yet and even so it mentions that they will start with the youngest child first before rolling it out to everyone by the end of the year.

My question is should I set up myself on Edenred through work and then change over onto the tax free vouchers when it is available? Am I allowed to do this?

the tax free scheme is to be introduced slowly with disabled and very young children first. As there is no start date yet, only early 2017. it would be prudent for you sign up for the employers scheme until you are eligible for the tax free scheme.

You will be able to switch to the new scheme when it is available to you.

I am a civil servant and my partner is a primary teacher - we are expecting our first child in December 2016. Partner will return to work in July 2017 onwards (so she can get paid over the summer holidays) therefore we will need to pay for childcare for a couple weeks in July 2017, not over the summer holidays, and again from September 2017 onwards.

I note that there is a tax free childcare scheme coming in next year, but am I correct in thinking that I would be better off signing up for the childcare vouchers scheme in December?

Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

My child will be 3 in June 2017 and we are hoping to take advantage of the 30 free hours for 3/4 year olds from September 2017. We both work, my husband will have earnt slightly over £100k in tax year 16/17 but will earn under £100k in tax year 17/18. Will we be eligible?
  • I'm a childminder and normally you have to be registered to look after someone else's child if it's for more than two hours a day for reward. .which can include an exchange of childcare. However after that palaver with the two police women I think there was something brought in that allowed parents to make their own private arrangements although I'm not a hundred percent sure of the 'rules ' of that. But you can have whoever you want to look after your child in your own home. So all you have to do with your friend is if you are looking after her child then you go to her house. And she to yours when she is looking after your child. That is perfectly legal.
