Apologies is this has been asked already.

In Gateshead we get 15 hours free childcare for 2+

Does anyone know if I could use this entitlement for a nursery in another county? The nursery I want to use is in Northumberland

You would need to ask the councils, but it seems unlikely.

Gateshead will fund nurseries that are registered providers with them. A nursery in Northumberland would get funding from Northumberland council.

Nurseries register with the councils to provide this funded childcare. It seems unlikely in the extreme that a Northumberland nursery would/could be registered with Gateshead council.

Just emailed them and you can :)
  • My daughter is a single parent on benefits with a 2yr old child.

My grandchild should hopefully qualify for up to 15 hours of free nursery from January 2016 (born Sept 13)

The nursery have understandably said that they could not guarantee a place/agreed times for January 2016 and to ensure this place my daughter would have to fund this herself from Sept 15 through to January 2016 at a cost of £65 every week (16 wks total = £1040)

Just wondered if anyone please knew of any additional help/funding she may be able to get please?

She is currently looking for employment :)

    Thanks for you time :)

If she was working, tax credits would help offset the cost. If you are home on benefits, the expectation is that you are looking after your child.

It doesn't help with the reality of how nurseries operate, but that's pretty much the way it is. She could ask the council to see if there is any discretionary funding?
  • Hi guys, I am on a salary of 19k and my partner £8.3 before tax.
    I work 45hrs/w and shes works 20hrs/w.
    Our son is 18months old.
    I currently get WFT Credits.

I am to understand we can get 70% off child care costs, but some people are saying only when hes 3.
Some are saying you don't get that 70% payed free to you, but it comes out of your pretax income?
    Can anyone clarify?

    Kind regards

When your son will be three, he'll get 15 hours free childcare. Probably that were confusion came from. You can apply for child tax credit, but given fact, that your household income is nearly £30k, you likely won't get 70% childcare costs back. Check on HMRC website, on benefit calculator. You'll get it in monthly-weekly payments.

Tax credits start at 70% of your eligible childcare costs, which gets added to the various other tax credit awards. The whole lot then gets tapered by your income. Using the table at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/tax-credits-entitlement-tables-working-at-least-16-hours-and-paying-childcare/tax-credits-entitlement-tables-working-at-least-16-hours-and-paying-childcare you can see that, roughly, if you had childcare costs of £90 a week then you would get £3k or so total tax credits per year. There is a more detailed calculator, but these tables put you in the right area. NB things like pensions come off before your income is assessed for tax credits.

The term after a third birthday, government funding to the nursery kicks in which gives you a certain number of free hours. Except in most private nurseries it gives you a discount because their charges are higher than local authority ones.
  • I was wondering, can I use the 15 free hours, in conjunction with childcare vouchers.

The nursey I am going with have informed me that the 'funded days' as they call it only covers half the cost, so I have to foot the bill for the other half and thought the vouchers would save me a fair few quid.

    thanks everyone
