Vodafone adds your number in Marketing Preference by default

I was surprised to find out Vodafone adds your number in Marketing Preference by default, when you get a contract from them. While ordering there is no option to remove yourself from Marketing preference.

I have been with Virgin, O2, Orange and Three for past 4 years and I have had my number in Marketing Preference by default.

Is Vodafone right to do so????.

This is the email I got from Vodafone today.
Hi XXXXX,
Thanks for your email to Vodafone about marketing preference.
I understand from your email that you would like to know why your number was in marketing preference.
XXXXX, when you take up a contract the number goes in marketing preference by default. You need to get back to us and we remove your number from marketing preference.
As informed in the previous email Shazia has already removed your number from marketing preferences.
I trust the above information is helpful,if you require any further assistance please feel free to contact me.
Kind Regards,
Vodafone Customer Services

The instore system definitely has selection boxes for each form of marketing (You are selected to recieve all by default unfortunately), and I can't imagine that the online system would be any different- Would cause an awful data protection stink if true.

  • You have tobe advised and given the option to be excluded from any marketing. Vodafone have to give you the choice at tme of purchase. Check the terms when you bought the phone but the sales rep hasto advise you of it anyway.

I would go to the ICO regarding this as it sounds like V maybe doing this to lots of people. The fines for this are now huge, any company who does not give the customer the choice to opt out or do not detail how to stop marketing can be shut down so big biz are obliged to follow lots of new laws which is a plus even more so for sms marketing.
