Porting mobile number to payg sim

Hi,
My husband is with 3 which runs out shortly. He needs to keep his number and was told he could change his current sim card to a payg sim on and leave a message on it saying his number has changed (he wants to take a new contract with 3).
How long would that message on his sim stay live for? Any costs such as having to top up the sim with credit?
Thanks
Sue

What most people normally do is...
Port the number to a payg sim, and use this sim in the phone, then sign up for a new deal with 3 and port the number from the payg sim card back to 3.
The important part here is, you have to use a non-3 sim for the payg.
If you don't want to keep the number going on your new contract, then what you suggested above would be fine, but your callers will be paying to listen to a message then scurrying for a pen to write your new number down and make another call to you.
If you do decide to do the number porting, I would try and use a virgin sim, or an orange sim. With o2 sims you have to top up with £10 before you can port out normally.
