Store Card Debt

in Credit cards
Hi
Ok i'm a newbie so i will apologise in advance for this long-winded thread!
The story goes............I managed to get myself into debt with a store card which i was paying off in monthly chunks of what i could afford, on the final payment i was told as a 'goodwill gesture' they would deduct a percentage which knocked £51.00 from the final payment so i took them up on the offer and paid it off in full in November 07 (or so i thought!).
That was the last i heard as i no longer have the card, however I received a letter from a debt collection agency just in April this year stating my debt of £51.00 was bought over by them and that they will be pursuing legal action should they not receive payment.
This has now left a horrible default on my credit history for the amount of £51.00 which i would pay but its the principle of things - theyve put a mark on my credit history for a debt I don't actually have due to the store card's 'goodwill gesure'. I have called the store card distributor who told me they no longer have the records on file and I have called the debt agency to explain the situation to them - but they just told me they would request the statements from the card distributor but this was mid April and they are still waiting.
I just want to know if anyone else has had a similiar problem or has any advice for me on this matter. Im seriously thinking to just pay off the amount but this won't remove the mark on my credit file (i was told by the debt agency that if they prove the debt to be false they will remove the default).
Hope someone can help me as im at the end of my tether here!
Thanks

Make an official complaint to the store card provider, stating what you were told, by whom, and when.
Didn't they write to you at any time since November 2007 before selling the debt on, or have you moved since?0 -
do you have the f/f letter from the card co? send that to collection agency wuth proof of payment.Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -
I wasn't sure if they would do anything if i sent in a complaint as theyre not handling the account anymore - might just send on in on the off-chance.
I moved last June but i was staying at my parents house so theyre receiving the letters from the debt agency but i didnt receive anything from the provider after November. I destroyed the card when i realised how much debt i was in and when i paid the acc off in full i thought that was the end of it - i was quite fickle actually now i think of it0 -
if i did it was lost in the move
Im a bit scuppered here huh!?

You can do a subject access request (SAR) to the store.

If you store any of the older records on microfiche, please be aware that the Information Commissioner deems this to be a relevant filing system under the Act. As such, any microfiche data must be sent to me in fully legible and comprehensible form.
Additionally, where there has been any event in my account history over this period which has required manual intervention by any member of your staff, or any other person, I require disclosure of any indication or notes which have either caused or resulted in that manual intervention, or other evidence of that manual intervention in relation to my business with you.
If you are unable to supply this data because there has been no such manual intervention, then please be so kind as to confirm this in your response.
