Losing weight whilst pregnant?

doesn't sound like you're dieting anyway, just sounds like you're eating healthily and exercising.
i'm no expert, but i'm assuming in the pregnancy books, it doesn't tell you to become a human Jubba the Hut, so it's fine.0 -

Remember that a growing baby, extra fluid, increasing breast size etc will all make you weigh heavier on the scales without you actually putting on any body fat.
Personally I just wouldn't diet while pregnant. But speaking as someone who puts on weight just looking at a cream bun, i've NEVER put on any excess weight in 6 pregnancies and in 3 of them actually weighed less after delivery than before I got pregnant.
Maybe because I never "ate for two". I can't honestly understand how people can put 4 or 5 stone on while pregnant. You'd have to be eating 12 hours a day with no exercise to do that. A lot of my friends who were constantly on diets to keep slim just used to use being pregnant as an excuse to pig out. Thats what puts weight on .....not being pregnant.
I put on 3 stone - not quite your '4 or 5' but close. I did not eat like a pig. For the first four months I could barely stomach anything, and after that I could just about manage plain bland food like toast and bananas. By the time I was in the third trimester I got indigestion after a normal sized meal, so nope, no overeating then, either.
I did however have crippling SPD which rendered me pretty much immobile from 6 months. Even on a restricted diet, if you spend most of your time UNABLE to walk, you will gain weight.
So please, watch your judgment.0 -

I'd second this (though I'm no expert) - from your OP it seems you're just eating healthily and getting more exercise - as long as the exercise is "moderate", I really can't see this creating any problems. I wouldn't, however, be weighing yourself with a view to measuring weight loss - just trust that a healthier life style will pay off once you've dropped your sprog

I'm 7 months pregnant and in theory have only gained 10lb from my preconception weight - but I lost 13lb with sickness!Self employed and loving it

I was in a similar position to you when I fell pg in May. Had just realised I was a stone overweight and been focusing on eating more healthily and had started doing about 30 mins light aerobic exercise a day. I wasn't exactly dieting (just cut out all the cakes and puddings and was trying to choose healthier options) so carried on with the eating pattern as I'm sure it is still healthy, balanced and enough calorie intake for the pregnancy. I tried to keep up the excercise but haven't done much for the last 4 or so weeks as the morning sickness kicked in at around 7 weeks and I simply wasn't up to doing anything. I think my weight is now slightly lower than it was before I fell pg.
I mentioned that I was a bit overweight to the midwife and asked about it and she actually laughed at me and said they wouldn't worry about it unless your BMI was over 35 so not much advice there!0 -

I'm not judging anyone and if you've taken it personally then i'm truly sorry.
I'm only speaking from my own experience and that of a couple of friends.
But as you said yourself if you are immobile for 6 months you will put on weight even eating healthily. In your case obviously your medical condition gave you no choice in the matter.
In one of my friends case it was due to pigging out on the sofa all day every day watching Jeremy Kyle and day time TV despite having a "text book pregnancy"
SOME women do see Pregnancy as almost a disability that absolves them from exerting themselves physically for 9 months. These are usually the same ladies who are shocked when all that weight they gained eating pizza and cream buns doesn't just miraculously disappear in the delivery room. How does a brown cow give white milk, when it only eats green grass?0 -
I was over 2 stone lighter at 38 weeks than before I was pregnant and that was with me being practically bed bound with SPD! (well I was supposed to be bed bound, unfortunately life doesn't stop so I used to have to cry my way to school and back :rotfl:) I often wonder how much more I would have lost if I was up to my usual activities.
OP, I think if you just eat a nice balanced diet and substite items for healthier versions (like swap chips for a salad or something) then you will be fine, the baby gets its nutrients from the food before you get a look in so your baby will be fine.
Oh and congratulations on the news xWork like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0 -
Medical opinion is quite divided, I think. The important thing is to make sure you're eating a balanced diet - some people diet and live on ready meals, sweetener-stuffed snack bars and desserts, that kind of thing - I think that's what you need to be wary of. Baby will take what they need first and you get the leftovers, so it's important to get plenty of the good stuff

Some women have blooming pregnancies and feel great all the way through. Others feel rough, rotten and ill for nine months. You tailor your activity to suit.I like you. I shall kill you last.0
