Nativity Play (merged threads)

Its that time again and we've just been given the details of the school play. Ive got to make my sons nativity outfit (leading role of Joseph). Ive got to make a long sleeve stripy tunic type outfit. Any ideas online on how to make, Ive got the sewing machine and the fabric just need the know-how?

I don;t even bother with sewing these, I just cut one long strip of fabric, cut a hole in the exact centre for the head to go through, put it on and tie it round the middle with a fabric belt.

When I used to make them I just made a rectangle shape, twice the length of child's height, cut head hole in the centre (a T-shaped cut leaves fastening or collar at front)
2 smaller rectangles either side for sleeves, then fold in half & just 2 seams to sew.
I didn't usually bother too much about hemming etc - the rustic look, you know!

Thanks, I have just finished my sewing. I cut rectangles out of brown paper as per Chipps' post. Quick flit with the sewing machine and hey presto. I am obviously now a threat to Versace!

    Thanks to all.
  • Don't forget the stripey tea towel for his head! Hope he enjoys himself.

Stripey tea towel already sorted. Did initially try to make whole outfit out of teatowels but then figured that is just too 'home made'!
  • i remember i was a shepherd in my schools nativity play. My mother sent me in with a tea towel round my head with a bit of string :)

  • Hello everybody, my 4 yr old daughter came home with a letter from school saying she's Mary in the concert and they need a costume & head dress by next week.

I'm not very creative so I need some help please. Can anyone suggest how to make a simple costume?

    Many thanks
