Aol crashing - any advice please

Options
Started 4 days ago. Has progressively got worse. Only minutes between the crashing at times now. I've spent forever on the phone to aol trying to solve it but no success. They've reset the settings three times, used the aol 'clean up' thingee for three things (sorry), got me to remove firewalls & virus protection. Asked if there's a printer or phone connected ( no & no ). I don't think they know what's causing it - they just keep resetting which has already been done ad infinitum.

Anyway just noticed last time it crashed - it's dropping aol but still connected to dialnb.com. dialnb.com was what was added after aol went to cpw - I had to add it about 2 months ago, when it failed then.

So what does it sound like if the dialnb.com is connected ie phone connected ( I'm on dial-up ) but the link between dialnb.com and aol is constantly crashing ? Thanks.

I'm a non-tekkie so can I run this by you?

Because I noticed the dialnb.com thing last night, I was monitoring what happened this morning. My dialnb.com setting was disconnected again this morning but when I clicked on it it reconnects. I did it several times - speeds when connected, 14.4Kbps, 9.6, 24.0, 44.4. - i.e. connect then disconnect just to see what it was getting. All within 10 minutes.

Spoke to aol again. Asked for Level 2, she came back and said ''do this''. I said ''done that'' ''what's going on with these speeds, I think that's my problem'', transferred to Level 2. Level 2 guy read notes, tried a couple of things, then said it's the server? it's having maintainence and their back-room people will resolve it ? But no time-frame and he wouldn't e-mail me confirmation of our conversation that it's server problems.

For tekkie people - problem initially that aol would crash ever so often. Then aol would crash a lot ( minutes ). While in aol it would noticeably slow down or freeze before crashing - and slower than normal even when working.

Partner has aol broadband ( but he's just bought a wireless router as he is going to leave aol/join bt on wireless ). His aol went down about 4 days ago ( coincidence ? ), he rang their helpline and they've told him he modem has gone, get another. But as I said, he's had enough.

What do th experts think ? Does it sound like an aol problem ( on my dial-up ) and ..... anything really !!
  • Hi,

I had the same problem when I got a new laptop with Vista on it. AOL said that its a "problem they have only just become aware of" but the truth is that they have switched the firm they use for the internet and peoples computers think its a virus and block it.

They sent me a new AOL disk with a couple of patches. It cured the problem instantly

However despite this I am still going to switch to a cheaper supplier

Thanks. Well as of this morning they've said it's a server problem and they'll investigate/fix but no time frame.

What's also worrying me is they've instructed me to strip out all firewalls, antivirus, spyware etc as they obviously thought ( earlier ) that they might be causing a conflict. The problem persisted still. I do online banking !!! Totally unprotected atm !!

Do you always do as you are told? You should not connect to the net without protection, especially when using dial-up!
