How the restaurant chains pocket your tips...

They're doing their jobs & the only thing that I get annoyed with is when there's an automatic 10% added onto the bill for service charge and they don't mention it in the hope of a bigger tip - whenever we go out as a team, if this is added, we only ever pay the bill with the service charge on it - they'd be better off leaving it off & probably ending up with a bigger tip instead!
But then that will be the company and not them as well.0 -
I guess it depends how you pay the bill. . . we tend to have a mixture of cash & debit cards & people always ask to pay their own bit (we have some youngsters without a great deal of money) and they don't always think to put the 10% on. When you explain it to them, they never have enough for an extra tip.
If that money goes to the company, then surely it should be dished out to the servers - it IS a service charge!

Got ya - then that's really unfair & next time, we'll ask for separate bills even though we're all sitting together & pay a tip in cash without an enforced service charge, then everyone's happy!

We never leave a tip in the uk, and when abroad leave a tip if the service has been very good, or someone has gone out of the way to be nice too the kids etc.
If you want to tip someone, you can all tip me for protecting the country..0 -
Agree with Rab here.. Loads of these chain restaurants have to do all the 'How are you?' .. 'Can I get you anything else?' as there are constant mystery shoppers in place.
We do leave tips as we feel that if we have had really good service or a good meal they staff deserve something, and as the OP said, quite a few places dont even give decent wages and expect people to give tips. Also another thing is serving in a restaurant is a job that many students get to fit around they courses etc, So I dont see why you shouldnt tip if everythings gone... Other people have differen views but im just expressing mine0 -

So what do you do in places where it clearly states "service not included". That means that what appears on your bill is simply payment for the food and drink, and the waiter/waitress will not get paid unless you tip. Since s/he has served you in the expectation of getting paid, surely not tipping is dishonest.
I wonder what would happen if you walked into such a place and at the start of your meal told the service person that you were not going to tip.0 -

This is why the trade union is campaigning for the staff to be paid at least minimum wage upfront, with any tips being added as a bonus for good service. What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0 -
I always leave a tip if I have had a good service, I always have done, If I could get away with it I would tip the waiter\waitress discreetly, ensuring the tip for the service they have offered me, goes directly to them.
Should the tip be divided amongst the chefs? I guess I as the customer would deem that the meal is what a paid for, the service is gratouitous.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A
