Yeah, a lot of what happens here depends on what the error was.

If it was something like using estimated readings then you're basically stuck with the increased ammount, as the bills will ask you to pass on an accurate read which would have sorted it all earlier.

If it's something like they were billing you correctly, but not ammending your payments even though the debt was increasing year on year, you may be able to negotiate a bit more as that is definitely a mistake they've made, although you could have checked it.

If it's something that's completely their fault, like they've been billing you for the wrong property or something along those lines, then you may have a good chance of getting those payments lowered and spreading it over a longer period.
