Can anyone recommend a fast cheap-ish 16GB USB stick?

The best I've found is this 7dayshop branded one, which claims to be 20.5MB/s Read/8.5MB/s Write for £18.99 http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_6&products_id=108130

but it looks very similar to the Kingston Data Traveller 101
    http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_6&products_id=106085

which the Kingston website says is only 10MB/s Read/5MB/s Write and most of the others are around the same, so I can't help wondering if the 7dayshop branded stick specs are accurate.
  • Selling off 4gb SDHC for only £4.99p at Aldi. If any left. Ask and see.:j
  • Class 10 is fast memory (purported 10 MB / sec minimum sustained write speed) and 16 GB is a lot of space for £18.99. The brand is "Transcend".

The list price is 19.99 but, if you use the "BACKFORGOOD" discount code, it comes down to 18.99. Quidco offers 4% cashback.

Here's the link: cheap SD card

This deal is apparently available for only 48 hours.

    All the best,

  • I bought a 32GB Memory stick last Friday from a company called gadgetsnstuff - you can Google them. It arrived this morning and it's brilliant! Best deal I have found for these at only £24.99 a great price. They also have 64GB ones; I think they were about £45 but still a great deal.

Caution - A while ago, I was trying to buy a Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo from one of Amazon's traders, but despite specifically having checked the availability of the advertised item before ordering, I was sent a superseded item. The item codes were very similar, only one letter different so easy to miss, but the new model has a longer guarantee.

The amazon link is broken, just so you know. Not sure who to contact about this though!
  • Samsung 16GB Class 10 SDHC Extreme Speed Card

Not only is it Samsung, and not only is it 16GB but it is also a Class 10!!!! Look at the class as this is just as important as the memory.

Get it from Amazon for £15.80 (includes postage).

    BARGAIN!!!! :T
  • When you buy any kind of memory card, make sure that you have the right kind of card. HD Video for example will not work very well with a slow card. Semi pros might find it frustrating if it takes too long to get their large size photos of their card.

If you do a once in a lifetime photoshoot (wedding etc), would you really want to use a cheap and untested card?

Cheap unbranded big cards? be reminded that there have been scams where equipment is fooled into thinking that the card is larger than they are. Test them thoroughly! (mostly USB sticks) (there are some howtos on amazon and ebay.)

Some cars have factory fitted MP3 players (Audi A4s for example) that only take SD (not SDHC!) I would buy now because these cards may not be available in the near future or at a premium. Also note that 4GB SD cards (just about still) exist but again I would not wait too long.

And finally. Make sure you buy the right card for the right use. Borrow, try and test.
  • The £6 Transcend 8gb SDHC referred to in today's Martin Money Tips as being £6.05 is actually £6.99 delivered. If you go direct to Kikatek's own site you can get the same card delieverd for £6.68 delivered using Kikatek's own super saver delivery.
  • I bought one of the 16Gb for £10 cards from an Amazon marketplace customer at the beginning of January after getting Martin's email.

They were branded Kingston (good name) and came in a decent looking sealed plastic container in good order.

They corrupted data from day one. I thought I was doing something wrong and tried umpteen different things over the next few weeks to try and sort them out.

I stumbled across the "Fight Flash Fraud" website and downloaded their suggested flash memory tester. The cards aren't 16Gb at all: they're 2Gb with their hardware reprogrammed to tell the computer they're 16Gb. This means anything you write to the card over 2Gb is lost!

I've contacted Kingston, who have confirmed this is quite common and I'm trying to get my money back, but please, highlight this and if anyone has bought a largeish SD card recently, please test it before you lose important data: fill it up as best as possible, eject it, re-install it and see if any files show up in LOST.DIR, or if you filenames are corrupted.

Better still use the tester program linked from the "Fight Flash Fraud" website (not allowed to post the link, sorry).

This is really really sneaky and seems to be quite prevalent. Imagine you put one of these in a camera? Quite possible you lose a fair proportion of your family pictures. This is a horrible fraud. Please beware.
