To use Office XP, the recommended system configuration is Microsoft Windows® 2000 Professional on a computer with a Pentium III processor and 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM.

Windows 98, or Windows 98 Second Edition
24 MB of RAM plus an additional 8 MB of RAM for each Office program (such as Microsoft Word) running simultaneously.
Windows Me, or Microsoft Windows NT
32 MB of RAM plus an additional 8 MB of RAM for each Office program (such as Microsoft Word) running simultaneously
Windows 2000 Professional
64 MB of RAM plus an additional 8 MB of RAM for each Office program (such as Microsoft Word) running simultaneously

The Minimum requirements according to Microsoft for XP is 256meg for Office.

If your pc is mainly for office a 1gig will be ample. You could opt for 2gig, to boost your pc performance wit regards to graphics and games, but it is not a minimum of 2gig you need for the job.

Not necessarily when buying a new PC. My point was that it's so easy to add another GB of RAM after purchase, so you don't need to search out a PC with 2GB minimum fitted.

Very true.

With Windows 7 coming within 18 months and applications becoming increasingly needing more resources I can't see any reason why you'd a) recommend 1GB and b) talk about a 7 year old program.

2 GB might be preferable for a variety of reasons, but it is certainly not the minimum requirement for a computer today.

For Vista, Microsoft recommend 512 MB for Home Basic, and 1 GB for all the other versions. The minimum recommended amount of RAM for Office 2007 varies between 256 MB and 512 MB depending on what version you use.

If the OP was using Photoshop Elements for their photos, for XP Adobe recommend 512 MB (256 MB minimum), and for Vista 1 GB (512 MB minimum).

You can do lots with a computer with less than 2 GB of RAM.

not many people upgrade their os, they tend to buy new pc's instead. Trying to future proof kit for an OS that hasn't been written yet, is a waste of money.

Why, when it has been said that it will have the requirements of the current operating system?

Not with you?

Microsoft have repeatidly said that one of the main objectives of Windows 7 is to run on the same hardware requirements that Vista currently runs on, ie 2GB for a comfortable experience..

a) The OP didnt mention they are getting a new version of office in 18months. b) not everyone uses later versions, as it stands to date the minimum requirements i have put on here, are exclusively from my Office XP disk. 2004 edition, maybe old to some. But I fathom a guess that 2007 edition doesnt need 2gig minimum.

So you'll need either 512 MB or 1 GB to run Windows 7, yet you say that the OP needs 2 GB minimum as Windows 7 is coming out in a year and a half (and if you believe that, you'll believe anything).

So he'll need 2 GB now as Windows 7 is around the corner, but when Windows 7 comes out, he'll only need 1 GB.

Odd.

Vista on 1GB is ok, but you really need to increase the memory to let Superfetch take advantage and deliver an all round good experience. Microsoft were slated for their rather optimistic requirements.

Windows 7 will come out in 2010, that is literally guarenteed because it will be a good anniversary for the company ;)

Microsoft also said you'd never need more than 512KB of memory.

how things change.

Recently change my tired laptop for a new un, has 4GB of RAM and it absolutely flies, but aye, you don't really need this - I don't really need this but for the slight additional cost from 2gb to 4gb it made sense.
You only need lots of RAM if your doing alot of multi-tasking/editing of video etc.
for everything else an additional 5 second wait for the app to load isn't exactly a killer - until you've used a fast machine then it feels like an eternity.
